The Isle of Wight SEN Support Group, together with Rainbow Club IOW, celebrated last Sunday by hosting an accessible Christmas Party for 40 Island children.
This community-focussed group of parents, carers and volunteers creating joyous support for children and families.
It started with enjoying snacks; others choosing more energetic playground activities. Inside rhythmic dancing streamers encouraging movement in time with the DJ’s music. Christmas tree and life-size inflatable Santa’s creating wonder and merriment.
Curiosity grew as Father Christmas stepped unexpectedly into the hall. Walking around chatting to families and children keen to talk including those a little shy.
Father Christmas told a tale of Rudolph’s antics growing up, before disappearing into the sensory room. Children quietly playing or hiding in a pop-up tent. Presents were delivered.
Volunteer elves wheeled a huge trolley stacked high with presents into the hall. Each child to receive a personalised present. Children and families immensely thankful for the gifts donated by both the Salvation Army and Isle of Wight Radio’s Christmas Toy Appeal.
The young crowd grew, waiting patiently, as names were called and presents given. Families taking photos of Father Christmas with their child, even the young one fast asleep in a chair. Memories to be savoured in future years.
A senior elf said:
“It was wonderful to see every young person’s face light up when they interacted with the decorations or Father Christmas. We are so grateful to all who gave up so much of their time and energy.”
Father Christmas added:
“Volunteers had to make all the rooms spotless, after working tirelessly getting the rooms ready only a few hours before. For making it joyful, thank you!”
