A man who was so drunk he failed to pay for his shopping on the self-scan tills at Morrisons has ended up in court after he returned to the store and became aggressive towards staff.
64-year-old Anthony Potter, of Trafalgar Road in Newport, appeared before the Isle of Wight Magistrates Court on Friday charged with being drunk and disorderly in a public place.
The court heard that on 14th July Potter had entered Morrisons supermarket in Newport and attempted to purchase a bottle of port and some salami. He is said to have been so drunk that he failed to actually pay for the goods and walked out of the store.
Later in the day, Potter returned and was recognised by staff who took him to a rear office to review the CCTV, with an off-duty Police officer assisting with the situation. It’s at this point that the 64-year-old inadvertent shoplifter became infuriated, refusing to pay for the goods and stating that the staff were corrupt.
Police were called to the supermarket and arrested Anthony Potter on suspicion of theft from a shop and being drunk and disorderly. The theft charge was discontinued on Friday as Potter had repaid the £11.42 owed.
Defending, James Cameron said that his client has alcohol problems and that he didn’t mean to steal the items having simply scanned his card in the wrong place. He went on to say that Anthony has since sought help for his alcoholism and has spoken to his GP.
Hearing that Potter has a previous conviction for being drunk and disorderly, dating back to 2018, they handed out a £92 fine and ordered Potter to pay £85 costs with a £34 surcharge.
