The Special Boat Service (SBS) and other Navy forces have been undertaking specialist training exercises as fears grow that so-called Islamic State terrorists may target UK shipping – with the port of Southampton being named as a potential target.
With tensions running high, forces have been carrying out mock high-speed boat assaults on ferries off the coast of Scotland, according to The Mirror. The SBS have increased their capability and are on constant standby for such an attack on Britain’s coastline, which could target passenger or cargo vessels.
As well as shipping constantly entering the Solent and traveling to the Port of Southampton from abroad, the Isle of Wight has a total of 8 car ferries operating to and from the Island, which could also be at risk.
The news follows calls from Cllr Dave Stewart for the Island’s emergency planning arrangements and local contingency plans to be reviewed to ensure they are fit for purpose for fear of possible terrorism here in the light of the Paris attacks by Islamic extremists.
Cllr Stewart said:
“Now is the time to ensure our council, our partners and our community are ready to provide the right response here should it be necessary. This approach reinforces the council’s underpinning priority of keeping our community safe”.
