bembridgecoastguardnightUPDATED: HM Coastguard, Police and the RNLI are involved in a large search and rescue operation in Sandown this evening (Friday). 

The Coastguard Rescue Helicopter from Lee-on-Solent, Coastguard Rescue Teams from Bembridge and Ventnor, Bembridge RNLI, Sandown & Shanklin Independent Lifeboat and Police are currently all in attendance at the scene between Culver Down and Sandown.

The lifeboats are conducting a search up and down the coast alongside the rescue helicopter.

UPDATE @ 20:40Island Echo understands a body has sadly been discovered in Sandown Bay.

The Coastguard Helicopter has now left the area, returning to Lee-on-Solent.

hampshireconstabularycrestUPDATE @ 23:30 – It has been confirmed that a body of a man has been recovered at Yaverland Beach after being found inside a kayak.

Bembridge RNLI’s temporary All Weather Lifeboat, the Frank and Anne Wilkinson, was launched at 20:00 to assist Sandown and Shanklin Independent Lifeboat and land teams for the search and subsequent recovery of a body. The lifeboat returned to station at just after 21:30.

Hampshire Constabulary have confirmed that the body is that of a male believed to be aged in his 30s and was discovered in-situ in a kayak.

The death is being treated as unexplained and inquiries are ongoing to establish the circumstances surrounding the death. A post mortem is due to take place.

Anyone with any information which can help the investigation is asked to ring 101 and ask for Newport CID.
