A school girl from Dover Park Primary School has won first place in the Travelodge Room of 2045 art competition, held to celebrate the opening of the chain’s new hotel in Ryde.
11-year-old Lucky Cambridge won with the competition after impressing the judges with her energetic vitality, raw graphic style and colourful vision.
Travelodge, the UK’s largest independent hotel chain ran the competition to mark coming to Ryde and being the town’s first branded hotel. Pupils at Dover Park Primary school were set the task of designing a hotel room of 2045. The rational of looking 30 years ahead was in line with Travelodge coming to Ryde in same year it was celebrating its 30th anniversary.
At the hotel’s official opening on Thursday 5th November, 16 pieces of artwork were exhibited and The Mayor of Ryde, Councilor Roi Milburn had the hard job of selecting the winning picture.
Lucky’s piece competed against an impressive shortlist of 16 original artworks all showcasing what we can expect to find in a hotel in 30 years’ time.
The Mayor of Ryde, Cllr Milburn comments:
“I’d like to offer my personal congratulations to Lucky on winning the Travelodge art competition. Choosing a winner at the official opening was difficult as the quality of the entries put forward by Dover Park Primary School was so high.
“I chose Lucky’s artwork because, to me, it represented a positive impression of the new Travelodge rooms. Her good use of colour, and attention to detail, both inside and outside the room, combined to make this the worthy winner.”
Miss Wilcox, Head Teacher at Dover Park Primary School said:
”We’re so pleased that Ryde Travelodge asked us to be a part of the official opening celebrations. This was a great opportunity for Dover Park children to be involved in the local community and it also gave the children a fun but educational project to work on.
”I’d like to congratulate Lucky on winning the art competition; her futuristic view on how a hotel room might look like 30 years from now is very creative. Huge well done to her.”
Yesterday (Thursday), Lucky was joined by her family at Ryde Travelodge to unveil her artwork which has been prominently positioned in the hotel’s reception area for all guests to admire.
As well as seeing her winning artwork displayed in the town’s first branded hotel, Ryde Travelodge, Lucky has also won a family weekend break in any one of Travelodge’s 504 UK hotels.
James Gadsby, Hotel Manager at Ryde Travelodge said:
“To mark the opening of the town’s first branded hotel and Travelodge coming to Ryde in its 30th anniversary year, we thought it would be fitting to host an art competition for young locals to get creative and design what they think a hotel room will look like in 2045.
“We were totally astounded by the high calibre and creativity of the artwork entries but unfortunately there could only be just one winner, so a huge congratulations to Lucky. The artwork is a great feature in our hotel and will be a great talking point for customers.”
Lucky Cambridge added:
‘‘I’m so happy that I won the art competition. Drawing what I think a hotel room will look like in the future was lots of fun. I tried to be really creative – imagining a bed which looks like it could be from a spaceship. I wanted to make my drawing colourful so it stood out on the day.’’
When asked where Lucky will take her weekend break, she said:
‘‘There are lots of places I’d like to visit like Scotland. It will be lots of fun wherever we go, especially as I’m going with my family’’.
Ryde Travelodge is a 41-room property situated on Lind Hill. The hotel represents an investment of £2.2 million and has created 10 new jobs.
