A 2,800-strong petition has been handed to the Isle of Wight Council today (Tuesday) in protest of plans to implement parking charges at two seaside car parks in Ryde.
The petition, started by Brading resident Tony Gibbs, calls for the Council to leave Appley and Puckpool car parks alone following the announcement that free parking at both locations is set to be scrapped under new proposals.
Fears have been raised that local businesses will suffer and that children’s play areas will no longer be free to use with parents left with no choice but to pay car parking fees, should the plans go through.
Mr Gibbs presented the petition to Cllr Jonathan Gilbey at County Hall, Newport this morning alongside Cllr Roger Whitby-Smith, who represents the Ryde East ward.
The issue will now go to the full council meeting on 21st May, where the petition will be discussed.
Signatures are still required to continue the growth of the online petition, which can be signed here.
