Islanders can now book to visit Lynnbottom or Afton Marsh tips on the same day, as the Isle of Wight Council relaxes restrictions imposed during the COVID pandemic.
From today (Friday), residents have the option of a same-day booking at the Island’s household waste and recycling centre (HWRC). However, the booking must be made at least 2 hours in advance.
The controversial booking system was introduced during the COVID-19 pandemic to control the number of people visiting the site, particularly Lynnbottom, at any given time. The booking requirement has remained in force since and it is only now, almost 3-and-a-half years later, it is finally being relaxed – but not abolished.
Natasha Dix, the Isle of Wight Council’s service director for waste, environment and planning, has said:
“You’ve asked, and we’ve listened.
“You will still be able to book in advance, but this extra change gives you the option of booking on the same day, if you prefer. This makes a more inclusive and flexible booking system that meets the needs of all our residents.
“The booking system has improved traffic management at the HWRCs, with health and safety benefits to the public and staff, as site access is now better managed.
“It has also improved traffic flows, particularly on the slip road leading to the Lynnbottom site. We listened to what residents told us in the annual survey and we responded.
“I hope that residents will enjoy the extra benefit of being able to make a same day booking to the recycling centres.”
According to the local authority, more than 85% of residents (unknown number surveyed) said they were happy with the HWRCs in this year’s annual recycling and waste survey. The majority of respondents were also either very satisfied or satisfied with the booking system. The results did however show people were to keen to see the introduction of same day bookings.
Slots are simple to book through the My Account service on the Isle of Wight Council website at www.iow.gov.uk/waste or by phone on 01983 823777.

Probably not as busy because more are fly tipping.
You need to see the fly tipping that takes place on a weekly basis down my road
Every time the bin men have been, they leave a trail of rubbish behind them.
Is that not flytipping?!
Do something about qué that’s in road every morning for 10am slot, accident waiting. Would be better that instead of member if staff having to check in every car they could direct traffic more and open earlier.
Totally agree, either reduce the number of slots for 10:00 am, increase the length of the slip road into Lynnbottom tip or actively manage people coming in to avoid queueing on the road which is so dangerous as people either do not want to or cannot afford to wait in the queue and start driving on the other side of the road. 3 times in the past I have nearly had head ones because of drivers not waiting and 2 of those were large tipper trucks which could have easily killed me if I did not slow down in anticipation of them using the wrong side of the road.
Reporting it to the council on numerous occasions with these improvement ideas has made no difference, but no surprise there
Yes,there are signs outside saying, no waiting 9 AM-10AM. Never enforced though. Seen people waiting as early as 8.30. We’ve said, will you listen to this?
Makes me wonder why I pay over £2,000.00 a year Council Tax!
The way things are going soon we will be paying £3,000.00 a year
what with income tax etc
50% of our wages are taken away from us!
It is hardly worth working thesedays.
“You Asked We Listened” when do they ever do that, how about repairing all the pot holed roads are you listening to that!!!
In my experience the booking system works well and has considerably reduced time queuing. Certainly helpful that same day bookings are now available- excellent news that the council/contractors have taken the suggestion and introduced it
Yes, it does. Never have to wait more than a couple of minutes.
God this Island is getting bad, no money spent on anything that needs it over here. Give it another 10 years it will be a carehome. All the young keep moving off and the elderly move on. I can’t wait to get me and my 4 young kids off this rock.
The continuation of the booking system post Covid, some 2 years ago now (!) was lunacy. It has simply encouraged fly tipping.
The important people with clipboards on arrival take great glee in turning people away without bookings when there (most of the time) no cars in sight with a bunch of waste disposal people sitting around doing nothing. Making bookings has never been easy and this “new” system is unlikely to be any better. A booking system is simply unnecessary.
Absolutely. Spot on. There is no need for any sort of booking system.
You are talking utter cobblers.
Before the booking system, when massive queues grew outside of the tip, people certainly did give up and fly tip.
The booking system makes disposing of domestic waste easy and efficient.
What has changed are the charges levied again businesses. That is where the increase in fly tipping has come from.
Yes it might have increased fly tipping, but those that do it have always done it. The booking system is probably as good as they can make it well no complaints from me. I personally have never had a problem booking, maybe I’m lucky. Its all a lot better than queuing up to robin hill roundabout. Booking works ,so leave it alone
