A total of 392 speeding motorists were caught by Police in March and April it has been revealed.
The enforcement was carried out by the Safer Roads Unit (SRU) which is part of the wider Joint Operations Unit (JOU) serving all of Hampshire, the Isle of Wight, and the Thames Valley.
Looking specifically at March, the team made 32 visits to 20 separate locations across the West, North East and South Wight, with 211 speeding drivers caught.
Moving to April, the team made 22 visits to 19 separate locations across the Island and identified 181 speeding motorists.
A spokesperson for Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary has said:
“We know poor driving standards including speeding are a concern to local residents on the Island, so we are committed to providing you with these regular updates. We have a number of teams and initiatives running on the Island to keep our roads safer, and this is just one of those pieces of work.
“When you report speeding or other driving offences, you may not always see an immediate police response. However, please be reassured this information is all used to help us develop the wider intelligence picture so we can target the most affected areas.
Article continues below this advertisement “We have Operation Mile set up which looks at all of this data and informs where our teams will have a presence on the road – whether this be our Roads Policing Unit, dual skilled Roads Policing/Armed Response Vehicle officers, Neighbourhoods teams or Response & Patrol officers.”
If the speed limits weren’t being sneekily reduced to generate more fines, then there wouldn’t be an issue with speeding.
the police can always be bothered to hide in a hedge to catch someone doing 31 in a 30, but cant be bothered arresting and charging shoplifters.
Maybe if your eyesight is so bad that you can’t see the speed limit signs, you shouldn’t be driving.
Given that the police generally allow 10% leeway and most speedos read 10% high, you aren’t going to be nicked if your speedo shows 31, so that old trope doesn’t wash.
That still means people doing only 34 will get ticketed, hardly speeding is it when they’re camera your Speedo and a satnav will all tell you different speeds
If you are doing 34 your speedometer will be showing over 37 mph.
When you are traveling in a straight line your satnav will show your true speed which will be about 10% below your speedometer. Because your satnav calculates speed as distance over time it will read below your true speed as you are cornering.
If you can’t maintain an indicted speed within 7 mph of the speed limit you probably need remedial driving lessons.
So many fines again, really, why?
I’m not condoning those who speed dangerously, I know there are some and they deserve all they get, but it seems the Police efforts to make the roads safer just aren’t working?
If the Police reported that nobody had been caught over the last month you could call their operation a success, but month after month nothing seems to change. Is it that all Island drives are speeders, or are the limits being broken actually appropriate for the roads they are being applied to?
To make our roads safer there needs to be a more intelligent approach to this situation, other than just handing out fines, because the Police’s current method clearly isn’t working!
It is working because the police are pulling in a lot of money from those fines. It’s not a safer roads unit it’s a revenue collector.
Unless they do it at nights when the boy racers are out, it’s not gonna make a difference.

Maybe island drivers just need to adhere to the speed limits then there would be no more convictions.
Yet they still keep wanting more from our council taxes each year

It’s an avoidable fine, doesn’t take police officers to operate and generates much needed money and is easy pickings.
Good on the Police. Its disgusting just how many idiots still speed. If your one of these that have been caught speeding you are part of the problem with this Islands hideous driving standards. I hope you get points on your licences and don’t try blaming “covert signs or coppers in bushes” for your crap and antisocial driving, it’s your fault no one else.

like the Old Berlingo parked along Great Preston Road taking up

Whilst at it Great Preston Road is a speeding Road, motorists drive along this
Road 50mph or more.
Road Safety on the Island is poor.
There is No Law and Order on Island Roads
The Council are clueless and the Law is invisible
hence speeding on Island Roads.
Utility Companies / Civil Engineering Companies drive around the Island
Towing machinery on trailers.
Many of the trailers either display no registration plates or different
Registration plates to the actual vehicle doing the towing.
The Island makes me laugh, it is one big joke.
The island is run by clueless useless fools.
The problem is: rather than deal with those on the road that are really a danger to others , they choose to place the mobile camera van in locations where they know they can more easily catch those accidentally straying 2-5 MPH over the limit. This is not done out of some deep seated desire to improve road safety, its done out of a need to meet “targets”.
Problem is 95% were the law abiding legal driver’s and probably doing 10/15% above limit in a non dangerous area,yet so many speed through Newport town often doing 40/50/60 and don’t get caught. Last night some dope in his Audi with crappy noisy exhaust some 5ft from my rear bumper, headlights on main beam trying to push me to speed up well above limit, then overtaking and going through red light.
If you are fined for doing 15% over 30mph, you are doing 34.5 mph and your speedometer is probably showing closer to 38mph.
That is not law abiding and the fact that your lack of attention allowed you to do this shows your driving skills are in need of improvement.

Come to Newchurch it’s like a race track.
The Law couod not catch a cold, yet alone a motorist.
They rely on a Van with a Camera.
A lot of this ,caught speeding , is money making exercise take example when was there a speeding incident say going down over York Avenue East Cowes ,very rare if at all .
But don’t get me wrong the limit is the limit .
on the other hand if the camera was about at the top of York Avenue at late evening it would be surprising how many photos that camera would take .
Arctic lorries, racing chaversters hammering along from osborne house to old road as they know the camera is never situated in that area
Aggressive and inconsiderate driving has been a problem on the Island ever since the road traffic police presence was reduced. Speeding is just one aspect of the behaviour. If an increase in fines is deemed as easy pickings then so be it. There’s a lot of arrogant and cock-sure drivers to educate. It’ll probably take some time ‘cos some of them are so thick they are programmed to keep repeating the same offence.
This is clearly a revenue raising exercise. The speed limit is the limit, but cameras are supposed to be deployed at accident blackspots. If this was case, the civilian operated mobile camera van wouldn’t be sited in places, where it’s illegal to park. Bus stops, straddling solid white lines, and grass verges, where there is no legal vehicle access. We know it’s to make money, don’t give us the safety spiel. If it’s for safety, site it on Beaper Shute, Military Rd, Downs Rd, and all the other roads where the real “speeders” keep crashing. And most of those have been partaking in drink and, or drugs.
Funny how they are so pleased to boast how many people they have given a fine too during a cost of living crisis and I’m sure that will negatively effect there insurance premiums. No crash figures, or accident rates in these 20 locations mainly because its all a scheme to park at the bottom of hills and catch people a couple of mph over the speed limit to get a nice pay-out. It’s a bloody discrase.
They want to catch the person in the small white , fiat i believe, who lives in Binstaed and travels towards Newport, speeds down Quarr hill and overtakes any vehicles on the road and enjoys overtaking at well over the speed limit up Wootton high street

Most racers know where they position the van, so they either do not
travel in that area and speed elsewhere.
The van needs to be positioned in different locations to catch speeders.
More vans are required on the Island.
Would be very interesting to see the statistics of how much people were actually speeding, most were probably only a few miles over the limit
If they were prosecuted then, obviously, they were exceeding the speed limit by at least 10%.
From that fact it is simple to determine the number who were actually speeding.
Answer: All of them.
