The Isle of Wight’s carnival season has suffered yet another blow as organisers of Ryde Carnival have announced that tonight’s (Thursday’s) main procession has been cancelled.
Thousands of people were expected to gather on the streets of Ryde from 18:30 to join in the fun of the town’s annual main carnival.
Sadly, the rainy conditions being experienced today – which are set to continue into this evening – have put a stop to the plans.
It is the 4th carnival to be cancelled this Summer alone. The 1st carnival of the year, Newport, had to be pulled alongside both Shanklin’s main and illuminated processions. Now, the last main carnival of the year has suffered the same fate as the 1st.
However, it is full steam ahead of Ryde’s illuminated carnival which is due to take place on Saturday night (2nd September), moving off at 20:30. It will be the last carnival of the 2023 season.
2023 has been a disastrous year for the many carnival committees around the Island, as well as the individuals and groups that take part. It comes after a challenging few years with the COVID pandemic.

Oh boohoo, a bit of rain at 8pm forecast. This is ridiculous, people travel from all over in all weathers to watch such spectacles. If you can’t be bothered to get wet then don’t continue to organise them. A HUGE ISLAND disappointment.
