UPDATED: A road on the outskirts of Newport has been closed this morning (Wednesday) following a single vehicle road traffic collision.
Emergency services were called to Staplers Road near to the junction of Blacklands Lane at around midnight.
Police, fire and ambulance crews are believed to have all been mobilised – including 2 fire engines from Ryde – but only Police now remain in attendance at the incident.
The road is currently closed in both directions with Southern Vectis’ Route 9 via Staplers on diversion via Fairlee Road until the end of its service tonight.
It is currently unclear how serious the injuries are or how long the road will remain closed for, but is anticipated to be cleared by morning rush hour traffic.
Eyewitnesses have told Island Echo how a vehicle has suffered severe front end damage, and came to rest in a hedge lining the carriageway having hit a tree.
UPDATE – Staplers Road has now re-opened following recovery of the vehicle.
It has been confirmed that the Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service were mobilised to the incident over fears persons were trapped inside the vehicle. That wasn’t the case and crews quickly stood down.
