A man who fell off his daughter’s e-scooter whilst drunk, having travelled the wrong way up Newport High Street, has been handed a 12-month driving ban – but says he has no intention of driving again. 37-year-old Liam Saltzer, of Bellevue Road in Cowes, stood before Magistrates at the Isle of Wight Magistrates Court on Friday (23rd August) charged with drink driving, driving otherwise than in accordance with a licence and no insurance – 3 charges he pleaded guilty to at the earliest opportunity. The Crown Prosecution Service told the bench that Saltzer had been seen weaving in and out of traffic on the High Street, Newport on 14th June this year. He then fell off the vehicle outside the Castle Inn pub, where he was tended to by an off-duty police officer. That officer recognised Saltzer and called for assistance from on-duty colleagues, who arrested the 37-year-old for drink driving after he failed a roadside breath test. He provided an evidential reading of 52 at the station. It’s no surprise that he was recognised by Police – Liam Saltzer has 15 previous convictions for 19 offences including for drink driving in 2009 and 2011, with the latest appearance in court being just last month where he received a suspended sentence at the Crown Court for violence. Defending, Jim Osborne said that his client was deeply remorseful and had been fully cooperative with the Police. Mr Osborne explained that the e-scooter had now been crushed, to the detriment of Saltzer’s daughter. Mr Osborne detailed Saltzer’s monthly benefit income of £1,200 a month and the fact that Saltzer has no intention of driving again as the DVLA have already taken his licence away due to epilepsy. Magistrates handed Liam Saltzer a 12-month driving ban, fined him £120 and ordered him to pay £85 costs with a £48 surcharge.

1200 a month!! Jesus! What the f#%! No wonder this country is the way it is!
It’s an E scooter its not going kill anyone but himself
I don’t know the person proberly has a drink problem
people are doing worse things in this country and getting away with it
Enough is enough with these scooters.
I am fed up with scooters being rode wrecklessly.
Not even a dent in the freeloaders benefits
Well known by the police goes shopping down the nic a few times.
There’s people on this island who don’t earn £1200 a month for doing what they can to make ends meet , then you get handouts like this. Irresponsible twat gets makes me sick and many others to.
That’s a lot of money for benefits , I work full time and I get around that much
It’s a disability… He has epilepsy that’s why he gets that
I know a few people with epilepsy who have full time jobs… No excuse I’m afraid.
Go on benefits then and do cash in hand jobs
I pay large amount of tax a year
It all goes to help fight wars which uk should not be paying for
Wonder whether he was ‘deeply remorseful’ for the 15 previous convictions. Just a parasite to society.
Must be a Reform voter
Lol
How much a month I’d like that to live on?
This country has got it all wrong??
Epilepsy can be controlled, if he quit the alcohol that would help stupid idiot.
He had his license took off him, and rightly so.
My question Is, people who ride these godforsaken things don’t need a license so how do they get away with that and if caught what do they lose?
Don’t understand this drink drive on a scooter ….? Correct Me if I’m wrong you can ride electric bike whilst over driving limit and not lose your licence as there is a specific offence of drunk in charge of a pedal cycle with no endorsements attached so the onus if any is to prove electric motor is working and being used so if battery flat definitely no offence
I suppose a further question might be, why did the daughter have an electric scooter anyway, as they’re illegal to use on the road?
So this scum gets £1200 a month for doing nothing whilst many hard working islanders would struggle to earn the same, add to that its council tax relief and all other freebies and he is on the gravy train, what is worse is the fact that the fines will be paid by the taxpayers and cost it nothing.
I dont think anyone should be called ‘scum’.
It de-humanises them, as though they don’t have the capability to act decently – which they do, of course – so why should they bother trying. Its actively discouraging them to be good citizens.
