Work to resurface Ryde Esplanade is now underway, with temporary traffic arrangements set to be imposed at the start of next week.
The work includes removing the existing carriageway surface, laying strengthening materials and then applying the new surface course and road markings.
Beginning this week and ending on Friday 9th June, the work by Island Roads will substantially complete the highways element of the Ryde Interchange project.
During the works it will be necessary to close sections of the Esplanade between Dover Street and St Thomas’ Street at certain times which, as well as affecting local traffic, it will also impact access to the Bus Station, Ryde Pier and taxis.
On Monday and Tuesday (5th-6th June), Esplanade bus stops will be moved to temporary locations in lower Union Street. Work will take place between 19:00 – 05:00.

Through traffic – Esplanade
During the overnight works, access through the Esplanade between St Thomas Street and Dover Street may be restricted with local diversions in place.
Southern Vectis bus services
On the nights of Monday 5th June 2023 and Tuesday, 6th June 2023, between 7pm and 5am, buses will operate from a temporary location at the bottom of Union Street, on the west side. At all other times, services will run from the new bus station on the Esplanade.
Taxis
During the works, if the Rose Gardens ranks are not accessible, a temporary taxi rank will be located at the bottom of Union Street, on the east side.
High friction surfacing
Further works to install high friction road surfaces will take place in the week commencing 19th June.

No it isn’t – the residents along the esplanade have been subjected to loud hammering of the road surface, loud scraping and digging of the street and general construction racket at midnight onwards- there have been numerous complaints sent in, as this work has not taken into consideration the sleep deprivation being imposed upon countless households.
perhaps you would like to look out of your bedroom window to see, only a few feet away, several pieces of heavy construction equipment in full operation with all the associated noise after midnight.
Try to improve things and you still get the whingers. Not as if the work is going on forever.
Oh really ron- tell you what – how about I play a recording of the drilling and banging at the same decibel level directly outside your bedroom window at midnight, night after night and see if you are still so dismissive about the effect on the residents of this disgusting, arrogant disruption of their ability to get a nights sleep

Why doesn’t the council compensate the residents for the noise and disruption.Could at least give each household effected a £100 each or a reduction on this months council tax.
Why should the tax payers pay for the council and island roads f ups
the council should be compensating every resident with an address on the esplanade – this excessive noise and intrusion into their lives has not been addressed. Perhaps a resident could record the noise and then play it outside the homes of those that don’t think compensation should be offered at midnight, to see how they like it.
Why don’t they plan works properly and do stuff in an orderly way, its almost as chaotic as the Gigabyte island nonsense

How does a 10million pound scheme to improve “connectivity” mean moving the taxi rank further away from the train/ bus station?
That part of the seafront has been wrecked by the council who refused point blank to listen to the residents concerns about tbe layout.Building a two lane road straight through those gardens was an act of civic vandlism.
The traffic chaos will be interesting the lights at george street are turned on and the traffic from the pier is trying to get on the esplande

Have you seen the junction turn from the Esplanade up George st, it’s a joke, so small and tight it’s an accident waiting to happen
Judging by the plans i don’t think it was ever intended that traffic would turn up George Street there, i believe the junction was designed solely to allow the busses to drive straight across rather than drive down to the roundabout and back
Let’s hope they resurface the bottom of George St at the junction with Castle St, been terrible for ages, or is this wishing for too much!
I contacted Island Roads last week about the disgusting condition of George Street from Melville Street to Star Street and they emailed back that they have no plans whatsoever to resurface there but they have happily torn up the Esplanade which was possibly the best road surface on the Island to resurface it despite it having only been totally resurfaced a couple of years ago.
Millions of pounds spent.Massive disruption for a year. End result-different but still the same.Who was responsible for this waste of taxpayers money?
Not a waste for the consultants and contractors who feed off the cash .
So when is that eye sore of a shop and station being done? I thought there was going to be new toilets and cafe or was that my imagination running away with me. Completed, I think not…
Also can’t see a cycle lane anywhere. Sold as improved connectivity but it was only ever about a new bus terminus and right of way across to George Street.
Just out of interest, how many near misses have there been to a lack of pedestrian crossing facilities?
I commute daily and the replacement crossing controls have not worked since the zebra was blacked out?
It used to work fine previously.Buses parked cars ran on the road and could drop off. Why did it have to be done? Very few people ever working on it.
