An Isle of Wight man who left a traffic warden with permanent nerve damage and a loss of feeling in his teeth after an attack outside a Newport school has been warned he faces possible prison time.
30-year-old Joseph Burgess, of Woodbine Close in Newport, pleaded guilty to wounding/inflicting grievous bodily harm without intent when he appeared at the Isle of Wight Magistrates Court this morning (Tuesday).
Liz Miller, prosecuting, told the court that on the morning of 28th March this year, a traffic warden was patrolling the safety zone outside Christ The King College on Wellington Road.
Outside the school – at drop-off time – an altercation ensued involving Burgess’ partner whilst she was dropping their children to school.
A short while later, Joseph Burgess arrived at the scene and approached the traffic warden. A verbal altercation followed before Burgess struck the warden with a single punch to the face.
Blood was seen streaming down the Council employee’s face with children and other parents witnessing the attack.
Despite the fact it was only 1 punch, Burgess was wearing a large ring which exacerbated the injuries sustained by the victim.
Burgess left the scene before officers from Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary and paramedics from the Isle of Wight Ambulance Service arrived at the secondary school, as previously reported by Island Echo.
The 30-year-old was arrested and charged just days after the incident.
In the victim’s personal statement, which was read aloud in the courtroom, the victim spoke about how he has suffered life-changing facial injuries including numerous facial fractures, permanent nerve damage and a loss of feeling in his teeth as a result. He also mentioned how his children had to see the incident from their school window and that he has still been unable to go back to work some 5 months later.
Defending, Oscar Vincent said that his client was ‘lightly convicted’ and that he knew as he left the scene that he would have to hand himself into the authorities.
Magistrates ordered an all-options pre-sentence report – which includes custody – be compiled ahead of sentencing at the Isle of Wight Crown Court on 3rd October.

He and we all know that since our prison population has swelled with the worlds worst flotsam arriving here that courts can never again give prison sentences to anyone unless they commit worse crimes than those already inside.
So a fine and suspended sentences is all this low life will get and he knows it
It will be a total and utter disgrace if this piece of “human” detritus is not imprisoned. Clearly, out of control scum like this should not be allowed out on our streets. Causing lasting physical damage because you are told not to illegally park outside a school is completely unacceptable behaviour. Just bang it up for a long, long time. Shame it can’t be sent to Rwanda.
I agree Ben. It is worrying that such psychopaths are walking our streets on this normally safe island. This monster should receive a long prison sentence to protect good people. I hope Island Echo publish a picture of this crazy animal so we can all cross the street if we ever see him on the loose.
Who is this guy Mike tyson with the one bang, the amount of blood that wasn’t a 1 punch scenario???
One punch… but with a ‘large ring’ – a miniature knuckleduster in effect.
His ring will be made larger in prison.
These scum need to die
If the Magistrates had it happen to one of their own things would be different
They just don’t care
People need to take justice into their own hands.
Enough is enough
He needs to have a harsh conviction BUT you are no better than him….calling for mob “justice” and his death.
He’s given himself a lot of grief to save his kids a 17 minute walk.
What an absolute tw#t and thug, his ‘partner’ deserves to take some blame too.Two scummy low-lifes.
5 months off work, another month and the Council’s HR are going to hit him like a ton of bricks.
Should be locked up minimum of 5 years I no traffic wardens are not everyones best friend but he was doing his job making sure school kids got in to school safely that road is a nightmare at drop off an pick up times cars parked in bus stop I’m suprised no kids have been run over an to actually punch someone infront of little kids out side a school is disgusting but knowing the isle of wight courts he will get a fine an maybe few hours unpaid work
Prison and a heavy fine ..
Definitely 100% send the scum to prison for a long time could have killed him if he fell back hitting his head
Joseph Eugene Burgess, who admitted drink-driving and driving without insurance and a licence on October 4, was banned from driving for 20 months.
Burgess, of Nelson Road, Newport, was pulled over by police along Lake Green Road, Lake, during the early hours of the morning.
Burgess, 27, formerly of Tulse Hill, Ventnor, had three women in the car with him………. Not the first time he has been in trouble and won’t be the last this was in 2020 send him down for a long time
His defending lawyer said he was “lightly convicted”.
I’ve heard of lightly poached, but lightly convicted? A nice way of putting that he’s been caught once or twice but got away with it on other occasions
Well traffic wardens do deserve it good job joe
“faces a possible prison sentence”. Another slap on the wrist. There should be no possibility about it. This scum should be doing 5 years at least.
Bullies will sort him out. When he goes on in the walled hotel.
I really hope that the thug does get jailed but I’m betting that he gets a slap on the wrist and leaves the court grinning like a Cheshire cat.
I reckon his wife needs to re think what she’s involved with?
She is the one who caused this premeditated assault, after being illegally parked and being informed of such by a person doing their job she then arrangers for her benefit meal ticket to commit assault, they should both be the dock.
Good old woodbine…lives up too its name with him just a snipit of what’s living there
Joseph Burgess from Isle of Wight, Newport seems like rather someone you don’t want to employ, lol.
He is my brother and that traffick warden scared my nephew by being aggressive with my sister he’s not as clean cut as he’s been made out to be my brother was simpley protecting his family like we all would so before you judge put yourself in his shoes
Is your brother married to your sister? I have heard that this happens on the island but I am surprised to find that you talk of it so openly.
Still can’t work 5 months later??!!! Laughing all the way to the bank…
