Dover Park Primary School has recently partnered with the Angling Trust to integrate fishing into their curriculum, providing pupils with a unique and engaging learning experience.
Driven by sports coach, Yvette Henry, the collaboration aims to leverage the sport of fishing to enhance pupils’ educational journey.
Through this partnership, Dover Park Primary has tapped into the Angling Trust’s expertise to train staff and deliver the “Reel Education” programme, which links fishing to subjects such as science, geography, and physical education. Vectis Fishing Club have also offered valuable support and advice, which
Neil Wylie, The Reel Education manager for the South, stated:
“I was thrilled to come to the Isle of Wight and see Reel Education being delivered at Dover Park Primary School. It was thrilling to be able to take those children who experienced fishing in the playground to fish on the Ryde pier the very next day. We look forward to supporting Dover Park School and others across the Isle of Wight in their angling journey from the classroom to the waterside.”
As part of the Angling Trust’s “Get Fishing” scheme, Dover Park Primary staff and members of the local Vectis Fishing Club have received Level 2 lead coach training. This certification allows them to safely deliver fishing sessions to the pupils, providing them with hands-on learning opportunities and a chance to explore the great outdoors.
Mr Kirby, the Headteacher at Dover Park Primary, said:
“There are so many incredible links to mental health and wellbeing through fishing, and we’re excited to be adding this fantastic sport into our curriculum.
“The children have loved the sessions, and we’re extremely grateful to the Angling Trust for their training and expert guidance and to Vectis Fishing Club for their support.”
Dover Park Primary has a strong commitment to forging lasting connections with the local community and providing its pupils with a well-rounded educational experience. The school’s partnership with the Angling Trust is a testament to this dedication, as it offers pupils the chance to develop new skills, foster a love for the environment, and enhance their overall well-being.
As the school continues to explore innovative ways to enrich the lives of its pupils, this collaboration with the Angling Trust promises to be a transformative experience, inspiring the next generation of anglers and outdoor enthusiasts.
As the recognised National Governing Body for fishing across England, the Angling Trust and its funding partners: Environment Agency, Sport England, Angling Direct and Shakespeare, are keen to offer ‘Get Fishing’ opportunities to every corner of the country including sometimes forgotten communities based just off the mainland.
