Officers were called to a public order incident on Yaverland Road at 12:53, when members of the public reported that a male was making aggressive threats and was in possession of an offensive weapon.
A 48-year-old man from Derby was arrested and whilst being detained tried to resist arrest and assaulted a police officer. They suffered a serious wrist injury as a result, which required hospital treatment.
He was arrested on suspicion of possession of an offensive weapon, resisting arrest and assault on police and remains in police custody.
Detective Sergeant Steven Norridge, said:
“This was a busy beach with many people enjoying the weather.
“We are appealing to anyone who was in the area at the time and had any direct interactions or conversations with this man to come forward and speak to us to help with our investigation.
“Anyone with any information or who may have witnessed the incident is asked to contact police on 101, quoting CMP 0973 with today’s date.”
UPDATE MONDAY – Police have confirmed that the male remains in custody this morning.
It has since been established that the individual is wanted in connection with a more serious offence.
