Police and fire crews are attending a car fire in Chillerton tonight (Thursday).
The Hampshire & Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service has mobilised a single appliance to dowse the blaze, which is said to be located in a layby on Berry Shute.
Hampshire Constabulary are on scene and the road has been closed while emergency services deal with the incident. They were first alerted at around 22:00.
Firefighters are using hose reel jets and breathing apparatus to extinguish the flames.
UPDATE – Luckily, the fire has been contained quickly meaning the surrounding verges and farmland appear to have escaped any serious fire damage.
The now unidentifiable 3-door hatchback – thought to be a Renault Clio – has been left as just a burnt-out shell at the bottom of a bridleway leading to Chillerton Down. It’s understood the vehicle has been abandoned in the layby for some time.
Berry Shute remains closed to traffic in both directions between Berry Lane and Loverstone Lane. Officers say the road is expected to be reopened shortly.

Renault Clio, been dumped there for weeks, I expect someone is sick of the sight of it and think maybe it get moved now!
its been there for months it was through the hedge further down the road, send the bill the registered keeps, it must still have chassis plate.
Registered owner? More likely a blown up pool car…
What’s a pool car?
Some fool thought it would be a good idea to torch it. Ok it was abandoned, it could have been removed by calling Island Roads or the Council. Setting light to the car could have spread to the grass verge and bushes. Bit irresponsible
A well known drug spot to all the homies, is Chillerton. It’s like down town Los Angeles or Bugis Street, Singapore, on a Friday night!
