A former Isle of Wight care home in Totland, which closed last year, could have a new life as flats.
In 2021, Seven Gables residential home, on York Lane, in Totland, was found to be inadequate by Care Quality Commission inspectors who reported unsafe facilities for residents and unhappy staff.
Although it won a good grade in July 2022, it closed just 3 months later, in October 2022 and the building then sold at auction the following month for more than £600,000.
Now, Surrey-based Glycine Holdings wants to change the former 22-bed care home into 10 flats, with a mix of 1 to 4-bedrooms, over 3 floors.
Planning documents submitted to the Isle of Wight Council, by agent Chalkline, say too much work is needed to return the building to care home use.
Instead, work will preserve the most attractive features of the existing building and remedy the more unsightly historical additions, the documents say.
An extension is proposed for the south-west corner of the ground floor and balconies and terraces could be added, to give the flats private outdoor space. Chimney stacks will be removed and new windows installed.
The former pool area would become extra parking spaces – including EV chargers.
You can view the plans, 23/01539/FUL, on the Isle of Wight Council’s planning register. Comments can be submitted until 6th October.

We don’t want flats for young people, we want homes for older people!
We need both – don’t be short sighted.
At least keep the chimney breasts, stacks & pots please. Part of our heritage and street-scene in the UK.
i am not surprised it got shut down looking at the way it was run. the manager was not fit for the job and the way he treated his staff. And yes i worked there
Does the island really need 4 bedroom flats.?
Would these be on the top floor with the best view, aimed at the second home market.? 1 bedroom and two bedroom would be cheap for young people.
They should keep the chimney stacks but I suppose they will be taking the old fireplaces out and chimney breasts too so they will have more room to convert the flats.?
My only concern is the extra vehicles using the narrow road and pulling out of the junction.
where’s the house plan
