A planning application for the demolition of Ryde Academy and the building of a brand new school in its place has been submitted to the Isle of Wight Council this week.
As previously reported by Island Echo, Ryde is to receive a brand new, multi-million pound school with a capacity of some 1,500 students on the site of the existing Ryde Academy. The new building will be a mix of 2 and 3-storey and will see a significant change in the layout of the school at Pell Lane near Binstead.
Ryde Academy was selected to benefit from the first phase of the Priority School Building Programme (PSBP) at the tail end of last year. At the time of the announcement headteacher Joy Ballard said:
“We are so excited to have been chosen for this project.
“The new building will help us to provide our students with an outstanding curriculum fit for the 21st century and enable us to take ambitious steps into the future.”
The new school will be constructed whilst the Academy remains open, with minimal disruption expected. Work is anticipated to begin at the start of June 2016 with the new Ryde Academy opening in September 2017, subject to planning permission.
The current Ryde Academy buildings are planned to be demolished by May 2018.
