“He stole a piece of me that day and broke me physically and mentally” – those are the chilling words read aloud by a sexual assault victim who stood bravely before the man who inappropriately touched and photographed her, just moments before he was sentenced to 44 months in prison.
Edward Addison, 77, of HMP Isle of Wight, admitted sexual assault on a female when he appeared at the Isle of Wight Magistrates Court back in October.
Addison also admitted 3 charges of making indecent photos/pseudo-photographs of a child between 2nd February and 14th April 2024, and breach of a Sexual Harm Prevention Order (SHPO).
Tim Devlin, prosecuting, told the court that on 10th May this year, at an address in Sandown, a woman collapsed and fell down a set of stairs. Addison then proceeded to sexually assault the female, placing his hand down her trousers.
The court heard how the female was falling in and out of consciousness but that she was able to feel Addison’s knuckles on her pubic bone and heard a camera shutter before then coming round, just as paramedics arrived. The woman told paramedics that she had been assaulted by Addison and the Police were duly notified.
Searches of Addison’s devices found that he had taken 6 images of the female – whilst she was unconscious – on his tablet. Also found on Addison’s devices were 3x Category A, 7x Category B and 23x Category C indecent images of children.
Addison was previously handed a Sexual Harm Prevention Order (SHPO) by Chester Crown Court back in 2016 after being convicted of several sexual offences including 2x voyeurism and possession of extreme images of bestiality.
At today’s (Friday’s) sentencing hearing at the Isle of Wight Crown Court, the victim in the case made the decision to read her victim impact statement aloud in front of a seemingly nonplussed Addison.
In her statement, the victim stated that she has suffered greatly from night terrors since the incident and often wakes up screaming. She said that she has resorted to barricading her door at home with anything she can find amid fears that someone may enter her property whilst she sleeps.
She went on to say that she blamed herself for what happened for a while before adding that Addison violated and took advantage of her.
Defending Addison, Jim Osborne told the court that the 77-year-old was remorseful and felt guilty that he had committed the offence against a ‘friend’ who was one of the only people who gave him a chance when he moved to the Island.
Handing down his sentence, His Honour Judge Melville KC stated that Addison had ‘behaved appallingly’ adding that the victim’s statement was ‘very moving’.
Edward Addison was sentenced to a 32-month prison sentence for the offence of sexual assault and a 12-month sentence for the offence of breaching a Sexual Harm Prevention Order, totalling 44 months overall.
The 77-year-old – originally from Warrington – was handed an 8-month concurrent sentence for the possession of Category A indecent images and a 4-month concurrent sentence for the possession of Category B indecent images.
A 5-year restraining order was also granted and Addison was handed a new 10-year Sexual Harm Prevention Order.
