The elderly driver of a Skoda is in hospital following a serious incident in Sandown last night (Friday) in which she mowed down a pedestrian just moments before crashing into a tree.
Emergency services were called Avenue Road at 20:45 following reports that a grey Skoda Superb had collided into a tree lining the carriageway, just outside The Tap pub.
At the same time, reports came through that a pedestrian had been hit by a car only 100 metres around the corner on Culver Parade.
It’s understood that the Skoda – driven by a woman in her 80s – travelled along Culver Parade and crashed into a number of parked cars before mowing down a pedestrian. The Skoda failed to stop and continued along the road towards Avenue Road, where the car then careered into a tree.
The pedestrian – a man in his 30s – was rushed to hospital by the Isle of Wight Ambulance Service under blue lights. He remains in hospital this morning (Saturday) with serious injuries.
The driver of the Skoda has also been admitted to hospital with serious injuries. She has not been arrested at this stage.
Cordons were initially erected around both scenes, with that cordon then being extended at 23:00 to include the Avenue Road roundabout which connects both roads.
Both roads have now reopened.
A spokesperson for Hampshire Constabulary has said:
“We were called just before 8.45pm yesterday (28 October) to reports of a road traffic incident in Sandown.
“A grey Skoda Superb collided with a pedestrian in Culver Parade and several parked vehicles before colliding with a tree in Avenue Road nearby.
“The pedestrian, a man in his 30s, and the driver of the car, a woman in her 80s, sustained serious injuries and both were taken to hospital on the island where they remain at this time.
“Enquiries continue to establish the circumstances of the incident and anyone with information or footage of the incident can contact us on 101 or report online quoting 44220438997”.

I have said it before and will say it again take older family members out in their cars see if you feel safe as a passenger see what their awareness is like this lady would have carried on all the way home if she didn’t hit that tree and would probably have been totally unaware of what she has done. This could have been stopped by one of her family.
You know this lady and the full circumstances then do you?
Yeah she hit a guy and carried on going then hit aload of parked cars and kept going then hit a tree. What else do you need to know? Bet if it had been you or a kid you’d have a different outlook
I know that if your not fit to drive you shouldn’t. She hit several parked cars a person and only stopped once she hit a tree
I take it you know the lady and i’m sorry to say it but people like you are what’s wrong with society today. clearly she was unfit to drive or she would have stopped after hitting the first car and not run a pedestrian over and crashed into a tree
The Skoda failed to stop and continued along the road towards Avenue Road, where the car then careered into a tree.
It didn’t fail to stop she was totally unaware of what she had done simple
She hit several parked cars and a pedestrian then drove away and hit a tree. I hope the police throw the book at the driver this time and don’t take sympathy with her due to her age. It is time that there was an upper, as well as lower, age limit for driving now.
Shame on you for that comment! Unless you know the FULL story and the lady in person I suggest you keep you opinions to yourself!
Without knowing the details, surely making assumptions and comments like you have is close to trolling
Sounds like she had a seizure or stroke or even a cardiac event rather than “just being old”. Can happen at any age. You shouldn’t make assumptions
Anyone named Paul can stay away from my children
I truly hope both will be OK, this is such a tragedy for both and their families.
I hope the pedestrian and the driver both come out of this ok. I know we can’t make assumptions at this stage but if you get past a certain age and you know you shouldn’t really be driving should you then be liable to criminal prosecution if you do drive? We’re not allowed to drive when we’re impaired through alcohol so if you know your physically or mentally impaired because of your age and unfit do drive as a result of this then surely it should be the same?.
I think you should’ve stuck with your original comment of not making assumptions!
Absolutely agree with what you have said.
you can’t make assumptions; but then you do.
I think it’s pretty obvious don’t you?
Re read Xp49’s post and try and understand what was said. No assumptions were made – he or she, was asking a question.
Actually, it is already illegal to drive if you know you are unfit to do so – no matter what the reason and irrespective of age.
I like that you block out the “undercover” car’s number plate.
I believe it begins with BX71
I hope the drivers ok
What about the pedestrian?
I’m sure he’ll bounce back
‘Mowed down’ bit dramatic, you’re making it sound it was deliberate.
Certainly was for the pedestrian, at least.
Gosh never considered that possibility. No mention of a Muslim driving so unlikely I hope, as bad enough if an accident
Is this an attempt to bring a religion into this incident? If so, please proceed to piss off and take your ugly agenda elsewhere. Yours sincerely, everyone.
It is not as if the hospital isn’t under enough pressure as it is! Young and old alike if you are anything other than stable (mental or physical) do not get behind the wheel.
That’s means most of the Island Roads will be empty.
Most idiots on the Island don’t know how to drive.
Sounds like a medical issue or the driver was under the influence I agree all drivers over the age of sixty should take an INDEPENDENT MEDICAL to ascertain there ability to drive as in many European countries. They test your eyesight reactions blood pressure and that you are controlling any medical issues one might have.
Along with all drivers under 30 presumably since they are involved in the majority of incidents?
Ol dies not equal incompetent just as young does not equal irresponsible.
Oh, and there are already compulsory fitness to drive requirements for the over seventies in place. (Requiring an actual medical doctor and everything!)
Over 60? Get real. Loads of people in their 60s are in far better shape than the lardy young slobs you see everywhere, and unlike you they are well educated enough not to confuse ‘there’ with ‘their.’
I think a compulsory shory cognitive driving test at 80 should be brought in. It doesn’t have to be the full test, but something to satisfy an examiner that the driver knows what’s going on. If they fail the shortened test they would have to take a full one to get a license back.
Old drivers are a menace to society. Get your bus pass and use it, that’s where you belong.
See bloody pensioner
Should have bought Japanese
Get these old gits off of our roads that could have been a kid she hit.
Shut up you complete moron. The “old git” might have had a serious medical episode at the wheel and until proven otherwise, you should keep your ill thought out comments to yourself.
Compulsory theory tests every ten years would deal with a lot of this. Also catch the people who have developed some bad habits. Driving is not a right, it’s a privilege.
Loads of info on this page, presume everyone commenting was at the scene of the event? If not then you are speculating and this is quite a negative approach until we know the full circumstances of this tragic incident, especially as both “victims” are currently in hospital due to serious injuries.
