A teenage cyclist has been injured following an incident involving him and 1 car on Lake Hill this afternoon (Tuesday) leading to major traffic delays heading into Sandown.
The incident occurred on Lake Hill and has seen a person injured following a collision with a car, the casualty laying on the road.
Multiple Police units were called to the scene at 16:38, with ambulance crews arriving shortly after.
Paramedics tended to the casualty – believed to be a young male on a bicycle.
Emergency first aid was administered to the casualty by members of the public, before paramedics arrived on scene.
It is believed that the injuries sustained by the cyclist are serious – with the teenager rushed to St Mary’s hospital.
Lake Hill has been closed from the bottom by the pedestrian crossing up to the top by the heights leisure centre.
Motorists are advised to avoid the area whilst the incident is dealt with due to lengthy tailbacks along Sandown Road, Broadway and Beachfield Road.

Another bad cyclist will be along soon..
Let’s hope they make a full recovery before posting jokes!
The only joke on here is him, and a bad one. Hope the lad gets back on his feet soon.
wow – disgusting comment with no context of the situation. shame on you.
The boy is a teenager, let’s hope no relative of yours has a tragic accident on a bike in the future.
You sick person the boy is 12 just another keyboard warrior hope it happens to you
Your comments are disgraceful. You seem to get a kick out of the road accidents that occur. You should be banned.
>>>/b/
IDIOT…..what ever your taking, Stop because your embarrassing yourself…
What the hell is wrong with you man!!!! He’s a child. God forbid it would be one of your off spring! If you got nothing nice to say I suggest you shut the hell up!!!!!!!!!!!
Sorry people I find it infuriating the amount of nasty stirs that read this website and the people that are supposed to be monitoring this fail to flag people like this joker!
You really are a piece of work! A young lad is seriously injured and that’s all you can comment.
How stupid to close the road. The lads in hospital A smart phone is all that’s needed to take photos and ask witnesses.
Seems they make more fuss yet give lesser sentences to idiots driving dangerously
For your information the road is always closed after a incident where there is possibility of a life changing or fatal outcome. The police collect all the information first because as so as the road is open all the evidence are lost.
I think all posters know that Chris, but what the poster is asking is why does it take so long now all units have hi tech cameras and measuring gear?
Easy to gain video images, with tape measures etc.
I can understand a murder scene where a weapon, dna etc may be hard to spot, but a child in hospital, the driver of the car there, and witnesses, makes it seem a quick evidence collection to me.
All stopping traffic does is cause the risk of more frustration and hurrying to appointments etc.
We all hope the child is ok, but every accident ‘could’ cause serious injury and death, it is only down to good luck they don’t, so ALL should be accessed in the same diligent way to find the cause of such close calls if that is the case.
Hi James I have been going to these types of incidents for over 35 years and it’s just the way the police work and they don’t have a crash team on the island anymore so they have to come from the mainland which takes time. Yes its very annoying but when they have to cut costs things get moved to elsewhere.
The boy had gone to Portsmouth he goes to my school
The Island is not safe for cyclists.
Where are cycle lanes to get from A to B!
The Island is years away from being cycle friendly.
It’s years away from being friendly full stop, if the comments on here are anything to go by.
The island used to be a pleasurable and exclusive place to live pre millennium. Now the roads are lethal. The council need to wake up and spend some money making the roads safe. I would suggest a 20mph limit on lake hill it’s terrifying just walking up or down it. I think a green man Crossing half way in the hill would solve a lot of issues. Chiefly saving our school children and elderly and general pedestrians getting run over. The fairway junction is hideous and the tesco express a total Hazzard. How can the council keep turning a blind eye. It’s about time everyone stopped paying council tax until the council look after the island it’s residents motorists and pedestrians and of course cyclists in this instance.
yes been saying this for years
They don’t need cycle lanes .. They’ve been given the freedom of the road..The bus I was travelling in was stuck behind one for a long time you would think the cyclist would have dismounted and stood to one side to allow the bus or Any other large vehicle to pass but no..They’ve been given the right and dont they know it.
They have a good dedicated cycle lane from the creaorium roundabout to the private hospital at Fairlea but do they use it, no, they deliberately block traffic and when traffic is stationary ride within inches of vehicles, i have had my wing mirror hit twice by these inconsiderate idiots.
Cyclists routinely ignore traffic liights, one way streets and ride illegally on the pavements yet nothing is done about it.
Says someone who has never used that cycle track. Not fit for purpose.
Neither is the Newport to Sandown track.
The Newport to Cowes track is the only one that is useable as a viable alternative to the road.
Agreed, many of the ‘cycle tracks’ actually provide a safe alternative to roads, with many routes abruptly dropping cyclists onto 40-50mph roads.
Portsmouth have been doing some great stuff with installing ‘road armadillos’ to protect cyclists from other road users, though I’m not sure our council would be able to do the same without spaffing a few million up the wall with the end result not working.
The cycle track you’re describing, actually requires cyclists to utilise and at times cross the busy Fairlee road, a massive design floor and fatality waiting to happen. Maybe get your facts right before you chip in Reg.
10 points to whoever clipped your wingmirror, sounds like you deserved it.
Lets hope the young lad is ok and makes full recovery. I was out cycling the other day and got held up behind a bus… I simply waited patiently until I could proceed.
And how many times is a cyclist supposed to do that? Just for busses? Or should they stop and dismount for lorries too? What about vans? Tractors? Motorhomes?
What are needed are proper cycles lanes that provide proper separation from motor vehicles, with good surfaces and where the vegetation is properly cut back.
Most of what we have that we laughably call cycle routes are rutted tracks that are frequently overgrown in the summer and muddy quagmires in the winter. Not for for purpose.
If the bicycle had been invented yesterday it would never be allowed anywhere near a vehicle road for health & safety reasons!
Every driver knows this fact, that a minority of cyclists give the majority of cyclists a bad reputation, constantly when driving I have cyclists coming up the nearest side of my vehicle, so close that some of them have hit my door mirror very hard bending it back.
Constantly when I am stationary at red lights, cyclists ride up the nearside of my vehicle, ignoring red lights and riding straight through them and when they can’t get up the inside of your car, they mount the pavement to go around you, I have seen pedestrians having to take avoiding action, to stop themselves being hit by the cyclist, put simply they blatantly ignore the rules of the road.
That’s why I will never respect them, they are lawless, aragant and kinky in their lycra….I don’t know about you but I do not want their bit’s sticking our their lycra, it makes me want to vomit..
Do you know the name of the boy if so pls tell me it may be someone I know
Think his name was Nunya Biznass
If people are not sure they shouldn’t post a name, if people know for a fact his name they shouldn’t post it, his freinds or even family may not have been given the news , and won’t want to read it on hear
Please tell me you didn’t seriously think that was his name To clarify I agree with you – whether his name is known or not, it’s not for posting anywhere
I heard he had webbed fingers so you may be related..
Are you serious you numpty.
Cyclists shouldn’t be on the roads, until they have to have a licence registration and insurance like motorists do they have no right to be on the road they have a cycle track that covers the entire island all to themselves they would bitch like he’ll if we drove our cars on their cycle track so get off our roads that we pay thousands a year to drive on same goes for bloody horses as well get off the roads low life’s
In an ideal world, but who is going to police these new laws?
Police still haven’t got on top of People using their mobiles whilst driving, illegal number plates(which we all see everyday),
and other minor road laws.
When you passed your driving test, good job you didn’t have to use punctuation, to pass the test.
If you drive like you write, no wonder you can’t concentrate on anything other than driving a car. God help any other Road users, when you give it your best go at driving.
Why don’t you go back to Scotland, if you don’t like English roads ?
‘they have a cycle track that covers the entire island all to themselves’ …. no they dont! (fact)
someones cranky.
Why do you open comments on these reports. A lad has been seriously injured and you give the usual anti-cyclist gobshytes another opportunity to vent their putrescent spleens.
Well said Mike, a lot of comments are both depressing and disturbing! Such reports should not be open for comments.
And yet here you are, commenting……..
I wonder if it was the cyclist zig zagging in and out of traffic along The Broadway five minutes before the acciident.
More than likely.
No it wasn’t
I wonder if the driver was one of the ones using their phone, or speeding, or tailgating that you probably saw on that same journey but chose not to mention?
“The incident has saw” – do these reporters know anything about English language?
I had to do a double take!!
If bad english offends you so much stop using site..try the BBC. Myself Id sooner have prompt local news think thats more important. Feel free to scan this comment and mention any of my gammar if it makes you feel good. Sad.
Try getting an education, you may find it easier to apply for your benefits.
Well done. When I point out typos they don’t normally get printed.
Thats coz ur a boring twat…..yawn.
Get well soon nipper x
Why is the road still closed at 22.30 pm.
i think he might be a kid from my school
Out the way cycle lane
Hope and pray the young lad is okay.
I hope he makes a good recovery and his family get all the help and support they need.
The child was on the path and fell into the driver in the car. No ones fault. A accident and so glad none of you over opinionated people were the civilians kind enough to help out in the accident. I think that some of these views are disgusting and you should give yourself a shake. The child is recovering thankfully.
