The Isle of Wight Ambulance Service is tending to a motorcyclist on the outskirts of Newport this morning (Wednesday).
Paramedics were called to the scene of the incident at the top of Staplers Road shortly after 08:00.
It’s understood a male has come off his bike at the entrance to the former Lavender Farm, where Staplers Road meets Whiterails Road and Blacklands Lane.
He has been placed into a neck brace and placed onto a spinal board as a precautionary measure.
2 ambulance crews and an officer are in attendance.
UPDATE @ 09:16 – Police have now closed the road in both directions and are appealing for witnesses, as it is revealed the motorcyclist has suffered potentially life-threatening internal injuries.
Thames Valley Air Ambulance has been called in and has landed at the St Mary’s Hospital helipad.
Police are working to establish whether any other vehicles were involved in the incident and are asking for anyone with information to call Police, quoting incident 344 of today’s date.
Staplers Road has been closed in both directions from Wootton Common to the Staplers Road gyratory. All traffic is being diverted via Long Lane until further notice.
UPDATE @ 10:32 – The mainland-based Collision Investigation Unit has been requested to attend the scene to help piece together the events of the incident.
The road is expected to remain closed for the remainder of this morning.
Reports of a second crash on Staplers Road have been confirmed as a minor 2-car shunt, which has already been cleared.
UPDATE @ 15:10 – Staplers Road has now re-opened in both directions.
Southern Vectis’ Route 9 buses have returned to a normal service.
