World Bee Day is an annual global event raising awareness of the importance of bees and beekeeping for the survival of our ecosystems. 3 out of 4 food crops across the globe rely on bees and other pollinators, but those pollinators are under threat from human activities.
In the morning residents took part in a bee quiz, whilst sipping pre-dinner drinks, and enjoyed creating ‘bee’ words, such as BEEhave, BEElieve, BEEcause.
Residents had a bee-rilliant time in the afternoon learning about bee keeping and having the wonderful experience of meeting local beekeepers, Carol and Terry, from Ark Park Bees. They explained what causes bees to swarm and showed how they moved them when they do – they hold a basket under the swarm, bang the branch it’s on and it falls into the basket and can be transported to somewhere safer for them.
Residents also enjoyed sampling the Ark Park honey and pronounced it to be absolutely delicious!

General Manager, Kim Fleming, said:
“Our residents all love to watch the wildlife in our garden, so they were only too happy to help plant some bee-friendly flowers to attract more bees and butterflies. Bees are so important, and we need to look after them. The residents found the talk from Carol and Terry most interesting, and we hope they’ll visit us again.”

“We had such an interesting day today, I loved the bee keeper talk. We learned how clever bees are and that they can pick up on people’s moods. It was fascinating.”
