Works to resurface the pavement on one of the busiest roads in Ryde will get underway next week, resulting in a one-way system being introduced for all traffic.
Island Roads will be undertaking improvement work to lay a new footway on St John’s Road in order to bring the pavement – which sees a lot of pedestrian movements between Oakfield and the town – up to the standards required by the PFI contract.
Travel disruption is expected for 2 working weeks from next Monday (25th September) as the busy arterial road will be made one-way in an eastbound direction. The restriction will be in force around the clock, although work is only expected to take place between 07:30-18:00.
The one-way system will be in place between High Street and Riboleau Street, so it is thought that local traffic may still be able to access Bennet Street when travelling westbound from Oakfield. The official diversion, however, takes vehicles via East Hill Road, the Esplanade and through town to Five Ways junction.
Later this month, Island Roads is also planning carriageway maintenance works on St John’s Road, which will be carried out over 1 night only. It’s then thought that anti-skid will be laid overnight at the end of October. Further details are expected nearer the time.
Island Roads apologises for any inconvenience and would like to thank residents in advance for their co-operation during these highway improvement works.

Will cause havoc as there is no IQ test to being allowed to drive. So many drivers just stop in the road when they see something they can’t understand. Instead of driving to a place where it’s safe to stop and working out a new route. They just bluescreen and hold everyone up whilst their brain cell tries to workout what ‘road closed’ means.
Then just drive round the “closed” sign in the hope it doesn’t apply to them, we saw this on the esplanade when they were creating the farce of a bus station and cycle lane.
Shouldn’t be a problem if proper diversion route signs are set out by Island Roads. Then again…
To bring the surface up to the standard required by the PFI contract. That will be uneven, cracked, and full of weeds growing through within weeks then, like all the other shoddy pavement work they have done.
You mention ‘Oakfield’. Oakfield isn’t on St. Johns Road but on St. Johns Hill.
So, are the proposed pavement works only going from the Ryde High Street/Green Street traffic lights down towards Monkton Street (St. Johns Road)? Or are they extending from Ryde St. Johns Road Railway Bridge up to the junction of St. Johns Hill/Oakfield High Street?

What has happened to the road resurfacing promised by the pfi.It seems to have come to an end with many roads not being done .After an initial surge you now see no planers or tarmacing taking place except for patching.Have the council blown all the money?
