UPDATED WITH VIDEO: One person is thought to be trapped inside a car following a crash on Beaper Shute in Ryde this morning (Sunday).
Firefighters, Police and paramedics are attending the incident, in which a car is thought to have collided with a tree. No other vehicles have been involved.
The road has been closed and motorists are being diverted.
Southern Vectis buses are diverting via St Helens and Bembridge until further notice.
UPDATE @ 12:00 – Firefighters from Ryde have now freed the single occupant from the vehicle – a Porsche 911 Turbo.
Ambulance crews have raced the male casualty to St Mary’s Hospital, however his condition is currently unknown.
The Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance has attended the scene, but has not been required to airlift the casualty.
Witnesses have described to Island Echo how the car had overtaken other vehicles when it lost control and veered off into a tree, before coming to rest facing oncoming traffic. It is unclear if a tree branch had fallen into the vehicle’s path.
UPDATE @ 13:21 – It has been confirmed the casualty has sustained serious injuries in the crash, however those injuries are not thought to be life-threatening.
The road remains closed in both directions whilst debris is cleared from the carriageway by Island Roads and the vehicle is recovered.
UPDATE @ 13:56 – Beaper Shute has now reopened in both directions. The vehicle has been recovered by Stag Lane Motors.
Southern Vectis buses will resume a normal route.
