The saga of Sandown’s derelict Ocean Hotel rumbles on, with yet another court date set.
The matter will be back in court on 10th November after a judge last week (Friday 15th September) ordered all those involved to attend in person.
Sandown’s biggest eyesore has been the subject of legal action since February 2022, when the Isle of Wight Council issued a tidy-up order to Phoenix Commercial Property Development (PCPD). The authority required the property company to make the seafront hotel safe and secure, but PCPD appealed the notice.
The matter has been going through the courts ever since.
Isle of Wight Magistrates threw out the appeal before PCPD itself appealed that decision at Durham Crown Court. A judge in Durham ruled the case needed to be heard on the Island, so it was sent to the Isle of Wight Crown Court.
At last week’s hearing, former PCPD director, Stephen Purvis, appeared on behalf of the company via video link to hear the new date set.
PCPD sold the freehold of the Ocean Hotel in 2022.

Compulsory Purchase by the council is needed.
IW Council couldn’t purchase a packet of crisps, how the stupid b’stards can let this
Saga go on I don’t know.
It affects tourism and other businesses in Sandown.
The Councillor of Sandown should be ashamed, they have the cheek to
charge people 50p to use the toilets in a sh@thole like Sandown.
I am old enough to remember when Sandown was a nice and well
Presented place.
You must be about 150yo from what my dear late mother used to say about Sandown!
149 and a 1/4
Lol
That is easier said than done. Phoenix Commercial Property Development (PCPD) are claiming it is not their property, so it is not their responsibility to make the building safe. The Council can’t Compulsory Purchase the building until they know who to purchase the building from.
Oh dear! I despair…
Is there a law, where a property cannot be sold if there is legal proceedings by a local government against it? It would stop a lot of these companies switching titles/ownership of a property to avoid any responsibility.
an application to Land Registry will find the legal owner which is a very cheap thing to do – and anyone can do it. Also if it’s a company, that can be followed up at companies house. It’s all information openly available and easily sourced if someone wanted to bother.
Sandown from the sea looks like a derelict dump. That hotel needs to be confiscated from the owners with no compensation, then sold off by the council with an order to do something with it
