18-year-old Owen Chambers – who has admitted causing serious injury to a child during a road traffic collision on the outskirts of Whitwell back in February – has been warned that he is likely to receive a custodial sentence when he next appears before a judge in January.
It was on 25th February, at just gone 16:40, that emergency services were called to a crash between a VW Golf and a Mini One on the main Whitwell to Ventnor road, as previously reported by Island Echo.
A young boy aged 12, who was a passenger in the Golf, was taken to St Mary’s Hospital and later transferred to Southampton General Hospital with serious injuries including a hematoma and serious bruising.
Chambers, of Mountbatten Drive in Newport, appeared before His Honour Judge Ashworth KC yesterday (Monday) and admitted causing serious injury by dangerous driving, perverting the course of justice, driving without insurance, failing to stop and driving without an MOT.
It took Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary several months to secure the charges, due to the fact that Chambers denied being the driver of the vehicle, stating that his passenger was behind the wheel.
The case has now been adjourned so that a pre-sentence report can be compiled. Chambers has been handed an interim driving ban until his sentencing hearing on 17th January 2025.
Judge Ashworth told Chambers that he should be under no illusion that he will most likely be getting a custodial sentence when he is sentenced in the new year.
