Primary school pupils will learn what happens to their rubbish and how they can do more to recycle thanks to a new waste education programme.
As part of the new 25-year waste contract between Amey and the Isle of Wight Council, schools can book free practical workshops which will be tailored to their requirements and focus on hands-on activities.
Information will also be made available for parents or carers and advice can be given to schools about improving their own recycling processes.
The education programme will be available from January 2016 and will be delivered by The Footprint Trust. Interested schools can find out more and book a place by calling 01983 822282 or by emailing [email protected]. Under the scheme, each school will be entitled to receive at least one visit every two years.
Councillor Luisa Hillard, Executive member responsible for sustainability, said:
“This new waste education programme will run for the duration of the contract and will show children why it is very important to recycle and reduce as much waste as possible.
“The Footprint Trust is very passionate about the Island and recycling and it is very pleasing it is helping to deliver the new scheme.”
Paul Southall from Amey said:
“This is a fantastic programme to get young people really thinking about recycling and how we can do more to help the local Island environment. We’re looking forward to working with The Footprint Trust to bring exciting and fun waste workshops into the classroom.”
Amey will also be setting up a new Community Waste Forum which aims to give organisations and residents information and updates on areas including operational updates, any proposed changes to services and plans for improving waste treatment facilities on the Island.
In addition, it will provide an opportunity for local residents and representatives to give community views and ask questions. Anyone interested in finding out more about the forum should email [email protected].
