The man behind plans to transform the East Dene site in Bonchurch has once again put forward a planning application to renovate the historical site, just weeks after the previous application was scrapped. It was earlier this month – as previously reported by Island Echo – that plans to turn the site into an aparthotel were withdrawn by Mr Robert Camping of Wonder House Group Ltd. No reasons were given for the decision. Since being put forward earlier this year, plans to transform the site changed dramatically numerous times with the final – albeit scrapped plans – wishing to place 8 eco-lodges on site amongst numerous other upgrades. But now, just weeks after that decision, Mr Camping has put forward new plans for a change of use from mixed residential to include alterations to create an additional 6 dwellings. Changes to the Grade II* listed building are set to be internal only with minimal change expected on the ground, first and second floors. No external alterations, except minor changes at roof level, are expected. To accommodate the proposed apartments, there will be a total of 20 parking spaces created on site. If plans are approved, there will be 1x 1-bed, 2x 2-bed and 2x 3-bed flats as well as 1x 4+bed house. The previous schemes were met with a wave of opposition including that from Historic England, the Victorian Society and the Georgian Group. East Dene, built in 1824, used to be an Allnatt Children’s Activity Centre and wedding venue but closed in 2020 due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. All comments should be made by 26th January 2024. Those wishing to view the planning documentation should visit the Isle of Wight Council’s planning portal quoting reference 23/02196/FUL.
