L-R: Old plans, revised plans.Controversial plans to turn the historic Isle of Wight East Dene estate into an aparthotel are no more. Proposals had been on the table since the end of last year to transform the currently empty Grade II* listed building in Bonchurch into first a wellness hotel and then an ‘aparthotel’ with 6 flats and a commercial kitchen. The schemes had been met by a wave of objections from nearby residents who said it was an ‘overdevelopment’ and raised road safety concerns. Earlier this week, the Isle of Wight Council updated its planning register to say the applications, 22/02249/FUL and 22/02250/LBC, had been withdrawn by Robert Camping, the man behind the plans. No reason for the withdrawal has been given. The revised plans were submitted in September after public concerns were raised, but residents said the new plans failed to address them. Some said they understood a sympathetic restoration is needed for the preservation of East Dene and that any plans should complement its unique setting, not compromise it. Bodies including Historic England, the Victorian Society and the Georgian Group have all opposed the development. East Dene, built in 1824, used to be an Allnatt Children’s Activity Centre and wedding venue but closed in 2020 due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Wake up, it is not racist or anything else. We CANNOT afford to house them etc. We cannot look after our elderly without taking their heating allowances from them. So, who would YOU rather have the money go to? Maybe we should take away the elderly’s bus passes as well so that we can help these people??? Before anyone starts on me, I do not care what colour or religion etc people are. We cannot help being born to the way we all are. Just think how many more illegal immigrant’s we can afford to take. It is not rocket science.

Would you suggest banning cycling? Rugby? Hiking? The amount of times I read various reports of people requiring rescue via helicopter etc from these activities is far greater than the odd person who gets into trouble in the sea. We have rescue services for a reason, you can’t go banning all fun activities because there is risk attached! Otherwise we would lead very dull existences.

Common sense says either secire itor have someone responsible looking after it.
The sooner they ban inflatable beach toys the better.
