Plans to demolish a former hotel in Sandown and build housing in its place have been brought back before the local authority for consideration.
An application has been submitted to the Isle of Wight Council’s planning department to demolish the Cygnet Hotel, replacing it with 6x 3-bed semi-detached houses and a block of 5x 2-bed flats.
It was back in 2019 that an application was submitted for a similar scheme made up of a 3-storey block of 6 flats and 3x semi-detached houses. The application was withdrawn just 2 months later.
The Cygnet Hotel, located on a 0.6-acre plot on the corner of Carter Street and The Broadway, ceased trading around 4 years ago due to recurring losses. The building is now said to be in a very poor state of repair with serious water damage.
Under the latest application, 3 pairs of semi-detached houses would face The Broadway, with the block of 5 flats situated on the corner of Carter Street. 13 car parking spaces would be provided to the rear.
You can view and comment on the plans (22/00369/FUL) on the Isle of Wight Council’s planning register. Comments must be submitted before 27th May.

Greed from owners to maximise profits and fully backed by a council with the same lack of care at the loss of buildings with class to be replaced by more ugly boxes.
No matter jobs won’t exist no concerns over more people yet no parking as both the owner and the councillors will ensure they live far away from it all
and what is the result of tenants with no jobs – social housing, with those living there on benefits, which the council claim the council tax directly from the state, that they can spend on theirselves – with a higher population, they can ask for more funding from government, which they spend on theirselves – as you say, those that make policy, aren’t subject to it, or live near the consequences of it.
this should be turned down, along with all other requests, as the island is filling up, less greenfields left and unless someone is going to build more land, the island isn’t getting any bigger.
This is not a greenfield site. The more brownfield sites you block the more likely green filed sites will be used. As for the jobless, no jobs for them because people like you are doing everything you can do to prevent any economic growth on the island. You are to blame!
try again fred – your argument is flawed – go back and do some research and then talk – … hint – a house built is another in a queue at the dr/dentist/supermarket etc – another car on the road – clearly you don’t think these things through before speaking do you fred.
I hope this application is granted. The currant building is an eyesore.
The suggested housing would fit in nicely with the other homes in this road.
Hopefully the vacant plot on the other side of this road will be developed soon.
