A Merchant Navy officer will be running from Ryde Pier to St Catherine’s Point – and back again – to raise awareness of the Merchant Navy.
Mo Tamimy, from Ryde but originally from Wolverhampton, will complete the 30-mile challenge this coming Monday (20th February).
His journey will begin at Ryde Pier Head at around 07:00 and will see him travel around 15 miles to the most Southerly point of the Isle of Wight – a journey that will take around 5 hours. Then he will turn around and head back to Ryde – another 15 miles and 5-hour trek.
Although the purpose of the run is purely to raise awareness, any donations are welcome to the Merchant Navy Association – https://mna.org.uk/index.php/en/donations.
The term Merchant Navy is a title that was given by King George V to describe the collective British civilian commercial fleet. That is a commercial ship flying the Red or Blue Ensign. Today, these range from the Queen Mary 2, RRS Sir David Attenborough to Wightlink’s Victoria of Wight.
Although not as common nowadays, ships of the Merchant Navy were once manned by majority British crews.
Between the officers and sailors of the Merchant Navy, there are 2 Victoria crosses, multiple George crosses and distinguished service in both World Wars, the Falklands and more recently in The Gulf.
However, there is a lack of awareness of the Merchant Navy – both its past achievements and its current form.
Mo currently serves with he hopper dredger MV Cemex Go Innovation, with a home port of Southampton.
