The body of an elderly man has been found inside a Ryde property that was ravaged by fire on Sunday night.
Throughout today specialist firefighters from Hampshire & Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service’s Urban Search and Rescue Team have been assisting Police with accessing the burnt out shell of the cottage property off Monkton Street, as previously reported by Island Echo.
It was on Sunday evening that a blaze broke out, resulting in the roof of the property caving in. This led to dangerous conditions and a delay in teams being able to enter the property to locate anyone inside.
Following efforts to shore up the structure, Police officers – including Search Advisors, Crime Scene Investigators and specialist dog handlers – we able to successfully enter the property this afternoon.
Sadly, it has been confirmed that the body of a male was found inside.
Island Echo understands the male to be elderly with limited mobility. He is said to have collected items and lived alone.
His next of kin have been informed.
The death is not being treated as suspicious and a file is being prepared for the coroner.
