A man who yelled lewd comments towards women during Cowes Week, attracting the attention of security and later Police, has pleaded guilty to 2 charges including digging his fingernails into a Police officer’s hand, causing 2 cuts.
57-year-old Karl Stay-Sothcott, a porter for the NHS, appeared before the Isle of Wight Magistrates Court on Tuesday charged with assault by beating of an emergency worker and using threatening/abusive words or behaviour likely to cause harassment, alarm or distress.
Leah Dillon, prosecuting, told the court that it was at around 22:00 on 4th August this year that Police were alerted to the fact a male was making misogynistic remarks to women, which made them uncomfortable.
Officers responded and located Stay-Sothcott, of Star Street in Ryde, who was described as being aggressive.
It was when he was being detained that he fell over as a Heras fence collapsed. As he was assisted to his feet, he dug his fingernails into PC Baxter’s hand.
Defending, Henry Farley told the court that his client was not a drinker and had not drunk wisely on that night. He said that Stay-Sothcott was embarrassed to be in court, especially seeing difficult people at the hospital and now becoming one of them.
Magistrates adjourned the case for a pre-sentence report to be compiled. The case will be next heard on 2nd December 2022.
