42-year-old Jonathan Eldridge, who attacked his wife with a meat cleaver on Christmas Eve, has been found guilty by a jury.
Eldridge called the ambulance service to his home address on West Street, Ryde at around 22:20 on Friday 24th December last year. He told call handlers that he had struck his wife in the head with a meat cleaver, having returned to the house through the back door after being out drinking.
Police officers and paramedics responded to the address where they found the victim unresponsive on the sofa, having suffered significant blood loss. A crime scene cordon was established and officers remained present throughout Christmas Day.
The 42-year-old was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder and subsequently charged with causing grievous bodily harm with intent.
During a trial at Winchester Crown Court this week, a jury were told how Eldridge continued to ask, ‘why did I do this’ following his arrest.
Appearing at Isle of Wight Crown Court on 3rd March this year, he entered a plea to causing grievous bodily harm without intent, but this was rejected and the case proceeded to trial in Winchester this week.
Today (Wednesday) the jury found Eldridge guilty of causing grievous bodily harm with intent. He has been remanded in custody to be sentenced at the same court on 1st September.

Why was the charge dropped from attempted murder to GBH with intent?

That is a strong defence plus the fact he was drunk and that he did call the ambulance.
He may well of got away with it completely if they had not lowered the charge. In the end it is up to the courts to decide the sentence and to dish out exactly what he deserves.
