A Brading man who refused to leave McDonald’s until he was handed another milkshake has been handed a community order by the courts.
Shane Newnham, 39, of Morton Road in Brading, appeared at the Isle of Wight Crown Court earlier this week (Tuesday) having previously admitted using threatening/abusive/insulting words/behaviour with intent to cause fear of/provoke unlawful violence.
The court heard how on 22nd March 2024, at around 14:30 in the afternoon, a member of the McDonald’s management team was alerted to an issue at the front desk of the restaurant on St James’ Street in Newport.
A drunk Newnham was shouting ‘I’m waiting for another milkshake’. Newnham was handed his shake before saying he was waiting for 2 large fries.
Unsure whether he had actually paid for an order of 2 large fries, McDonald’s staff asked to see a copy of a receipt but Newnham was unable to provide one. He was told to leave but refused saying he’d only go when he gets his chips before then threatening to stab the store manager.
The 39-year-old then attempted to steal food from other paying customers before demanding a box of 20 chicken nuggets. Police were then called and Newnham was arrested.
In interview with Police, Newnham admitted that he had said a ‘few incorrect things’.
The 39-year-old was handed an 18-month community order back in February following an incident in which he kissed a child he didn’t know on a Southern Vectis bus.
Defending, Jim Osborne said that his client was experiencing mental health difficulties at the time of the offence.
Newnham was handed an 18-month community order with 40 rehabilitation days and a 12-month alcohol treatment requirement attached.
