A man has tragically died after being struck by a train on the Island Line network between Sandown and Lake, it has been confirmed.
As previously reported by Island Echo, emergency services rushed to the area of Los Altos Park at around 17:40 yesterday evening (Friday) when a train driver reported a collision with a pedestrian at the Los Altos crossing.
Despite the best efforts of local paramedics and the HEMS team from Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance, the man’s life could not be saved and he died at the scene.
A spokesperson for British Transport Police last night told Island Echo:
“Officers were called to the line in Lake, close to Lake Train Station, at 17:45 following reports of a casualty on the tracks.
“Paramedics also attended but sadly a person was pronounced dead at the scene.
“Officers are now working to identify the person and inform their family.
“The incident is not being treated as suspicious and a file is being prepared for the coroner”.
The man’s family have since been located and informed of the death.
Flowers have been laid at the scene as a mark of respect.
It is thought the train was travelling towards Sandown at the time of the collision, however, the full circumstances of the incident are yet to be established.
The tragic incident is thought to be the first fatality on the Island Line network since early 1996 – almost 25 years ago.
Rail services resumed late last night and are operating to a normal timetable today.

Very hard to believe, how could one not hear or see the Island Train… what are the rules before crossing railway tracks… STOP LOOK LISTEN….
Maybe the chap thought it would stop like a car… I just cannot think of how this could happen…
approx. 15 mph limit and a clear view, quite open area so the noise of train would travel well…
I have seen people texting and walk straight across roads without looking, or thinking… was this similar.. headphones on.. dark sunglasses…
Gonna miss you, Levi. So many memories. Thanks for every single one of them. Never knew anybody as witty as you. Class act.
