A man who was caught drink driving on his moped has been handed a driving disqualification and a community order.
Reece Conlon, 29 of Trafalgar Road Newport, pleaded guilty to drink driving when he appeared in front of Magistrates on Tuesday (20th September).
Prosecuting, Ann Smout told the court that in the early hours of 4th September, Police officers on patrol noticed a moped swerving on Horsebridge Hill in Newport.
Conlon – the driver of the moped – was stopped by police who noticed a strong smell of alcohol when the 29-year-old took his helmet off.
When asked why he was swerving, Conlon originally told officers he was trying to avoid pot holes before admitting he had drunk an hour or so before.
Conlan was breathalyzed and blew a reading of 103 – nearly 3x the legal limit.
Defending the 29-year-old, Barry Arnett told the court that Conlon was riding back home to check on the welfare of a friend who was experiencing health difficulties at the time.
Magistrates handed Conlon a 25-month driving disqualification and a 12-month community order with 80-hours of unpaid work attached.
He was also ordered to pay costs of £85 and a £114 surcharge fee.
Well this seems good. Are Magistrates finally getting the message how serious drink driving/riding is. Bring on more 2 year bans and community service and a fine plus court costs. People who think it’s ok to drink and drive just might think twice……..but I doubt it!

The disqualification is based on the level of alcohol in the breath/blood. Magistrates have guidelines they have to follow, they don’t just pick a random number of months out of the air.
