A man has been detained by police in Gurnard after repeatedly obstructing the giving of CPR to a seriously ill driver this evening (Tuesday).
Multiple police units alongside 2 paramedic crews from the Isle of Wight Ambulance Service and a paramedic officer attended Worsley Road at just before 21:00 following reports of a driver suffering a serious medical incident at the wheel.
It is understood that medically trained officers made swift efforts in a bid to sustain the man having removed him from the vehicle – which had been found in the middle of the carriageway.
During their lifesaving efforts, officers began to be obstructed by bystander, who is said to live locally. Officers on the ground have confirmed that the man – who is believed to have been intoxicated – was asked to leave the scene several times due to his reckless behaviour.
Having refused to leave, officers made the decision to arrest him to allow those working on the casualty to continue unhindered.
The man was eventually de-arrested and allowed to leave the scene after the casualty was conveyed on blue lights to St Mary’s Hospital.
The vehicle has now been moved from its position and traffic is able to pass freely through Worsley Road.
The condition of the casualty is unknown.
Island Echo has approached Hampshire Constabulary for a statement.

Bloody idiot should be charged
Maybe the future of Island policing is:-
1) Arrest
2) De-arrest
3) Forget about it.
What a farce.
The stupid intoxicated wally was trying to stop person being resuscitated & possibly causing the death of the patient.
Should be charged & given the maximum punishment available .
The event was tantamount to murder!
Very rare I’m lost for words!
Perhaps the officers should have deployed their own special defibrillater on this drunken idiot…a taser !
was let of because not enough police to process and charge him. Time government start spending our tax money on us and not spend 4 billion on re decorating their palace. Go google the cost of restoring the palace of Westminster.
