A man wielding a baseball bat is being sought by Police following an attempted break in at a pub in Freshwater this morning (Saturday).
At around 06:45, a male was seen attempting to force entry into The Vine Inn on School Green Road in the heart of Freshwater, smashing a window in the process.
The landlords were awoken up by the numerous bangs to the window but the suspect had fled by the time they had got downstairs.
It’s thought the suspect was wearing a red coat.
A spokesperson for the pub has said:
“We are absolutely devastated to see more vandalism in our lovely community.
”From CCTV we can see there were a few people about just before and after, walking dogs, on way to work etc. If this was you and you saw anyone around with a baseball bat, please let us know!
”As far as we can tell nothing was taken apart from empty bottles smashed into the road. We have cleaned up as best as we can but be careful walking past with kids and dogs.
“Thank you to Dan Holmes for helping us get the window boarded up and safe for now.
“Please be aware and keep your eyes open!”
Anyone with information is asked to contact Police on 101, quoting the reference number 44220419330.

More dirty scum walking the streets, should be shot on site…
It wouldn’t change anything but it would be interesting to know if all this recent violence, knife use, robberies, etc is being carried out by Island-born people or some of the more recent arrivals to the Island?
There does seem to have been a huge surge in crime here, I’m talking about the past 5-10 years or so and not necessarily about this particular story, which does correlate with a big increase in the number of families being rehoused here from the mainland and it does make you wonder whether the two issues are related.
As I said, it wouldn’t change anything and I don’t suppose we’ll ever be told, but it does make you wonder whether we (or the IW Council, actually) are bringing this upon ourselves?
I’d settle for them actually catching the crims. The more that get away with things the increased likelihood of crim activity.
The whole country is in trouble because we are far too soft dealing with lowlife that Woke Britain has created, it’s time we went back to basics…when you brake the law, you pay the price…build build build more prisons..and I mean basic prisons with no comforts…
I have planned my retirement and it does not invlove this dump. I am here making money then I will be off.
Bye then! Don’t let the door hit you on the way out.
You’ll be so very sorely missed, and I have no idea how we’re ever going to cope without you!
The same question SHOULD be asked re. Recent arrivals to the UK.
But No one in authority DARE ask that either.
So we all have to blame anything and everything else apart from the glaring obvious.
Sad state of affairs now.
Racism has no place here
According to stats I see on plumpot.co.uk IoW had the biggest jump in crime rate in 2017. What happened then?
(IoW violent crime is also up 18.7% this year, and crime rate overall is 120% of UK average.)
Although I think it’d be super counterproductive to release that data. People are usually rather little-minded and as a six-figure high-tax payer who works remotely from IoW after moving here I don’t want to be put in a position by people who’d use those stats to fuel their xenophobic attitudes. There’s enough of that already on the island as we speak.
Wouldn’t say xenophobic exactly, as an islander myself you’re exactly the type of person we welcome here. To be fair to Catherine’s comments I believe she is talking about those who are moved here by housing associations, trouble making wherever they go.
The IOW Council MUST stop taking these troublesome families. We don’t want them here. They’re here because nobody else wants them and they’ve probably been moved around by so many different councils, the only place left is the island. They are ruining this beautiful place.
What exactly is it about Kidders’ £100K+ tax bill and that he doesn’t spend time and therefore money on the Island that you welcome? The fact that his ilk keep house prices unaffordable for everybody else? Or perhaps that he can be relied upon to keep the Tories and therefore the status quo in place?
You need to do your research. Housing associations do not move people here and social housing tenants are just normal people who live in our communities.
It is true that the council are paid extra to house the,how can I put it politely. No I can’t,the scum that other councils don’t want.
Who are the recent arrives to the Island?
Majority are retirees turning this rock into a floating retirement home …can’t see them out with baseball bats stocking masks /knives or souped up”I am deficient in the p…s”area cars”just saying!
Must be desperate to get a pint.
What’s with this scum bag? Is he on drugs or something. Not a burglar, making too much noise for that. Just wants to destroy and smash things up. Needs sorting out himself.
Problem is housing associations pulling scum I from.inner cities throughout England to fill there units
We need a new government, led by someone with experience. At present, the most suitable candidate appears to be Larry, the chief mouser.
I have to admit, I like his policy to make the wealthiest work for their benefits.
It was Tim Saunders, off his head on cocaine sorry Tim but there’s just some things you keep to yourself.
