A 43-year-old man from Havant has been arrested on suspicion of burglary following a break-in at The Happy Haddock fish and chip shop in Shanklin’s Old Village over the weekend.
A cash box and till insert were stolen from inside the chippy at some point overnight on Saturday (7th) into Sunday morning.
Forensic investigators have been called in to examine the scene of the crime.
As a result of the break-in and subsequent investigation, the popular fish and chip shop remains closed tonight (Monday) and will also be closed tomorrow. Staff hope to be welcoming customers again on Wednesday.
A spokesperson for Hampshire Constabulary has told Island Echo:
“We are investigating a burglary which took place at a chip shop in Shanklin High Street.
“This took place some time overnight on the 7 December.
“A cash box and till insert were stolen from inside.
“A 43-year-old man from Havant has been arrested in connection with this incident. He remains in custody at this time”.
UPDATE TUESDAY – Police have confirmed they are investigating whether the break-in at The Happy Haddock is connected to a break-in at The Old Smithy, Godshill.
