For the 15th year running, the Christmas Lights display at Long Lane in Newport has been switched on and is this year once again raising funds for the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance.
Crowds gathered at the home of Terry and Sue Ramplin at 68 Long Lane last night (Saturday) for the big switch on at 19:00, despite the poor weather.
The display is one of the last remaining big Christmas lights displays on the Island and has this year been helped by cash donations from Southern Vectis and Newport Parish Council, as well as support from Shide Trees, Vectis Corps of Drums, Hamilton’s and HSS Hire.
Nearly £4000 was raised in 2014, smashing the target of £2500. It is hoped even more money can be raised this year, of which 100% goes to the HIOWAA.
Spirits were high as David Randini counted down to the switch on, with music from the Vectis Corps of Drums plus mulled wine and mince pies from Hamilton’s Fine Foods. The rain cleared and the wind eased just in time for the lights to go live.
Terry has spent several weeks preparing the display which not only covers the house, but the garden, driveway and garage too. Each evening the lights are on and Terry can be found outside welcoming visitors.
Islanders are being urged to continue to support the festive display of lights by heading to Long Lane and not only admiring the display, but stopping and giving generously to charity to keep the Air Ambulance flying and saving lives.
