The lives of around 30 men are expected to be saved thanks to funds raised by the Long Lane Christmas Lights display in 2022, with a cheque for almost £4,900 handed over to IW Prostate Cancer Support Group this week.
Each year Terry and Sue Ramplin’s Christmas Lights display in Newport attracts thousands of visitors who, throughout the month of December, were extra generous in donating a total of £4,879 to charity.
It was dedicated that the local prostate cancer support group would be the chosen charity for 2022, having helped save lives with money raised for the charity in 2021 too.
Since 2014 alone the Ramplins have raised just a smidge under £39,000 for charity, but have been lighting up their house so much longer – since 2000.
Geoff Waddington, Trustee and Treasurer of IW Prostate Cancer Support Group, accompanied by Alan Taylor, PSA Coordinator, visited Terry and Sue yesterday (Monday) to receive the bumper cheque.
Alan Taylor, PSA Coordinator for IW Prostate Cancer Support Group, said:
“This is the highest amount we have ever received from any individual or organisation.
“This year we will test around 1,750 men of which 275 will be tested at our Newport screening in November, at a cost of £16 per man. Thanks to the Ramplins this has now been fully paid for and we expect will help save the lives of around 30 men who simply wouldn’t know they had prostate cancer otherwise”.

Speaking to Island Echo, Terry said:
“Without the public coming forward and putting money in the pot, and the generosity of local businesses, it simply wouldn’t be possible to hand over this cheque.
“This year we battled -5c temperatures and rain, no bus tour visits and the World Cup but still raised a fantastic amount for this important charity”.
Long Lane Christmas Lights will return in December and will feature in Island Echo’s Light up the Wight. You can read more about the competition and map at www.islandecho.co.uk/xmas.

Congratulations we’ll done.
Will you now?
