The owner of an Isle of Wight holiday let is celebrating after winning a national award.
Owner Holly scooped the top prize in the Best in South Coast England and Isle of Wight category for her 2-bedroom apartment, Bishops Retreat, a converted 1860’s church.
The Sykes Gems Awards 2024, run by staycation specialist Sykes Holiday Cottages, saw thousands of entries from across the UK and Ireland – with Bishops Retreat beating off tough competition to take home the trophy.
Thoughtfully renovated after serving the community as a church during the 1900s, Bishops Retreat has retained an array of original features, including its lancet windows, while locally sourced furnishings and modern amenities have been added to bring it into the 21st century. The renovation was complete at the beginning of 2022 after being built through the COVID-19 pandemic.
Guests can enjoy exploring nearby sea and countryside, and returning to the cosy ground-floor property – which is adorned with original artwork created by Holly, available for guests. Keen to involve local businesses where she can, Holly also provides holidaymakers with local award-winning Crave ice cream during the summer, while in the winter she leaves sausage rolls from the village bakery.
Bishops Retreat first became available to holidaymakers in 2023 and is already booking up for 2025.
Properties were judged by a panel of industry experts, including Sykes’ CEO Graham Donoghue and Managing Director James Shaw, as well as The Sun’s Assistant Travel Editor, Sophie Swietochowski.
The judging panel were impressed by the unique setting Bishops Retreat offers, along with guest feedback on cleanliness, comfort and value for money.
