Businesses in East Cowes have been told that they will have to fend for themselves after plans for a flood barrier to protect properties were scrapped – 2 years after it was first touted.
The decision leaves 30 businesses without funded protection and help, whilst preventative measures are seeking help for 34 homes and a case is being drawn up for help for a further 34 residential properties.
Originally, a temporary frame was designed to be raised when flooding was predicted.
The purpose-built 250m frame would’ve run from Waitrose, through the Red Funnel marshalling yard and along to Clarence Road, where flooding earlier this year occurred.
Instead of the ‘shovel-ready scheme’, the Isle of Wight Council will now provide sandbags whilst the Environment Agency will also continue to advise.
Multiple reasons including accessibility, health and safety risks, restrictions on access to the floating bridge and factories and a requirement for road closures, have all led to the cancellation of the project – despite the town being at risk from major floods when declared so back in 2017.
In a letter sent to those affected, the EA stated that £300,000 in government funding would be made available to home and property owners but not those who own businesses in the centre of East Cowes.

This is BBC nonsense, the sea isn’t rising, the climate isn’t changing. Imagine believing that people can affect the earths climate.
How can you possibly still think this way after the summer we just had
A few days of sunshine? thats all we had, its gone until next year, the swallows are leaving and the leaves are turning brown, just as they have for millions of years, a few days of nice weather and the climate morons start yelping..
“Blasphemer….”. The woke pitch-fork brigade will be hunting you donw soon. You’ll be saying Covid doesn’t kill 95% of people within every town next!!!
No one said that about covid. Idiot.
I can’t tell if you’re being sarcastic or not???
Absolutely and fancy believing the earth is round as well its quite obviously flat isn’t it
As I have said before, if the council cleared the blocked up drain holes that run through the sea wall on the esplanade, a lot of this flooding would not happen.
Why can’t you do it ?
Not rocket………
If I had a set of drain rods I probably would. Hardly something that can be done with your bare hands is it.
We cant close roads to save businesses and homes, but we can close most of the island for a cycle race?
Typical iow council thinking. Thick as s%$t.
Can the councillors spare the sand for the sandbags. They need all the sand they can get to bury their heads in.
Ryde TC has plenty of sand. Regularly dredged from there recently purchased, Marina.
Sandbags are about as much use as a chocolate tea pot !!!!!
I know from many years ago we still got flooded !!!!!
Are they trying to kill East Cowes off as well as Newport??????
This is people’s livelihoods,,,,,,
Head in sand is very true…..
> Multiple reasons including accessibility, health and safety risks, restrictions on access to the floating bridge and factories and a requirement for road closures, have all led to the cancellation of the project
Isn’t this literally saying “we are car-dependent to the point we can’t no longer protect ourselves from getting flooded, we value cars over humans”?
Nice.
