The Lloyds Pharmacy branch at the Sainsbury’s store in Newport is to close next month it has been revealed.
As previously reported by Island Echo, it was announced back in January that the pharmaceutical company was to shut all of its 237 in-store branches this year in response to changing market conditions.
A month later, in February, it was confirmed that the closure date was the 25th July but it has now been brought forward a month to Tuesday 13th June.
On this news, a spokesperson from Healthwatch Isle of Wight has said:
“Please remember to make alternative provisions for any prescriptions you may need in plenty of time.”
The closure will mean the loss of a conveniently located pharmacy for Islanders, which is close to St Mary’s Hospital. It is often the latest opening pharmacies on the Island.
As a result, there will no longer be any LloydsPharmacy branches on the Isle of Wight once the takeover of those in Ryde and East Cowes is complete.
Kevin Birch, chief executive of Lloyds Pharmacy, said:
“This decision has not been an easy one and we understand that our patients and customers may have questions about how the change will affect them.
“We would like to thank them for their continued support and assure them that we are committed to providing a smooth transition over the coming months.”

It is a business, with shareholders whose sole aim is to make money. We all know what happens with loss making businesses! I honestly don’t know why the NHS insist on outsourcing things like GP surgeries, dentists and pharmacies.
NHS unions bang on about being against “privatisation”, but in reality, they have already privatised everything they possible can anyway (GP’s, call centres, 111 services, dentists, pharmacies, logistics, cleaning, supply chain etc…). In Scotland, even NHS hospitals are run by private companies (like G4S).
