Island business Liz Earle Beauty Co has announced that it has become a WWF partner, joining forces to protect the UK’s natural habitats and help restore biodiversity.
Since its launch in 1995, the British beauty brand has been committed to pioneering natural and ethically sourced skincare and has worked hard to activate green initiatives that align with its commitments to sustainability. This partnership with the world’s leading conservation organisation will be the next step in helping to raise awareness of the importance of biodiversity and stop the loss of nature.
The 3-year partnership will see the organisations working together to restore a seagrass meadow off the shores of the Isle of Wight. Tapping into the unique micro-climate of the island, the seagrass restoration will take place in the Solent and across the UK coastline.
Seagrass is a wonder plant that plays a vital role in the fight against climate change. It can capture carbon up to 35 times faster than tropical rainforests. It improves water quality and protects the biodiversity of the oceans by filtering nitrogen out of the water and acting as a nursery habitat for marine wildlife. Yet we are losing it fast – over the last century, the UK has lost up to 92% of its seagrass meadows and they continue to decline globally at a rate of 7% per year.
Liz Earle Beauty Co. Head of Brand Marketing, Claire Lee, said:
“Sustainability has always been at the heart of our brand and since its inception, Liz Earle Beauty Co. has been aware of its environmental impact. Throughout the years we have put many sustainable practices in place, considering everything from our packaging to responsible ingredient sourcing. Partnering with WWF feels like the natural next step in our commitment to building relationships that help to actively monitor and reduce our impact on the environment, as well as a chance to help our customers learn about the importance of biodiversity.”
Alex Lankester, Director of Partnerships, WWF said:
“Nature is in freefall, and the UK is no exception. We’re delighted to be working with Liz Earle Beauty Co. to inspire their customers to stop the loss of UK’s natural habitats and aid the recovery of biodiversity. The partnership will help us restore valuable seagrass meadows in the Solent and across the country, which provides an important habitat for marine wildlife and absorbs ocean carbon storage.”
The partnership will focus on informing Liz Earle Beauty Co. customers, and beyond, about the importance of protecting the UK’s biodiversity and will be raising funds to support the seagrass project over the next 3 years.
