Firefighters are using beaters to contain and extinguish a fire beside the railway line at Ashey.
1 appliance from Ryde is on scene just off Ashey Road, where dry conditions have led to a small section of grass embankment catching fire – most likely as a result of hot ash dispersed by the steam trains.
The situation is under control and staff from the Isle of Wight Steam Railway are assisting the fire service.
Hampshire & Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service was alerted at just before 13:05.
UPDATE @ 13:40 – Ryde’s firefighters are now standing down from the incident having quickly resolved the situation. The fire is said to have measured around 20 x 5m.

Is that it for today? A small lineside fire……..
I think that’s quite dramatic for a sleepy hot Wednesday.
