The Green Party’s Vix Lowthion has been backed as a leading candidate to be the Island’s next MP, with the Lib Dems standing aside locally in next month’s General Election.
As a result of an arrangement negotiated with input from local parties, the local Lib Dem candidate has stepped aside on the Isle of Wight. It means Vix Lothian will run uncontested by another Remainer on 12th December.
The agreement – facilitated by the cross-party group Unite to Remain – provides a big boost to the Green Party candidate who has seen her support rise substantially over the last 2 elections.
Vix Lowthion, who is a secondary school teacher, said:
“I’m delighted that people are uniting behind the campaign to elect a Green MP for the Isle of Wight. Brexit has been a shambles. It’s time to bring it to an end and move on to tackling other issues. I support a People’s Vote so the people can make the final decision and I will campaign for Remain.
“The big parties in Westminster have let us down. As Green MP I won’t be whipped and will be free to speak up for the best interests of the Island. Greens here have the best possible chance of winning the seat. We need more influence in Parliament to hold other parties to account and push for the really bold actions that are needed to make Britain fairer and tackle the climate crisis.
“That means protecting the countryside, fighting to keep local services on the Island and challenging ferry costs which are too high. Crucially it also means investing in green industries to provide jobs on the Island as well as improving our environment.”
In 2017’s General Election, Bob Seely was elected MP for the Isle of Wight with a total of 38,190 votes. Vix Lowthion achieved 12,915 votes and Nick Belfitt for the Lib Dems gained 2,740. That means the joint Green/Lib Dem total was 15,655 – less than 50% of the Conservative vote.

We have already had a vote .the result was to leave .why cannot these people accept that.
That was three years ago and it’s proved too difficult. We need a new referendum.
So you don’t believe in Democracy then?
I wanted to vote green but when they decided to ignore democracy and the majority vote I decided to withdraw my support. You MUST do what the majority ask even when you disagree with their view. I voted to remain, leave won. I will do everything to ensure that the result of the referendum stands, to do anything else is dictatorial and wrong. We must leave the EU, it’s democracy.
It was only an advisory referendum, should’ve read the small print.
“You MUST do what the majority ask even when you disagree with their view”
Does that still apply if:
a. The vote was only ‘advisory’
b. Those campaigning told some massive and blatant lies to bolster their support, so what people were voting wasn’t real
c. The vote was so close that if they hadn’t it might easily have gone the other way.
I voted Leave but now I know the reality of what leaving means (as opposed to what was claimed before the referendum) I’d not have voted that way if I’d known.
If you bought a product based on outrageous advertising claims, which were later proved to be false, would you want to be able to change your mind & get your money back? Or would you prefer the “so you got conned?.. Tough!” attitude?
I also voted Conservative once, but now I’ve seen how incompetent they are in government, I’d like to change my mind & vote for someone else,..is that OK?
The government stated that they would hold a referendum and implement the result – no ifs or buts – we voted to leave – so we leave. That is how the democracy works in this country -we are not stupid – we know what we are voting for and anyone stating otherwise is arrogant and up themselves.
Perhaps when the election results come in, we say “oohh I didn’t want that person winning, I haven’t got my own way – I will whinge and complain loudly until they hold another election because that person didn’t uphold the manifesto they were elected on last time”
The result must be and should already have been implemented, otherwise faith in the ballot box is lost. Faith in the ballot box is fundamental to our way of life and without it, we are in a dictatorship.
Had the original referendum result been the other way, then the remainers would have been shouting from the rooftops about democracy in action, people spoken, result carried, set in stone, never to be repeated – motion carried. Well the leave vote has it and the same applies.
Political parties are supposed to stand on their own, not cook up alliances to try and rig the elections to suit their own ends.
I for one will not vote for the green party, simply because they have managed to remove the lib dems as opposition and that is an attempt at rigging the result by narrowing the choices.
The arrogance of these individuals is breathtaking and they will all lose their deposits.
The torys polled far more last time and will be returned to office again, as they are steadfast in their plans and not attempting rig the result.
LOL… @’none given’, I love to see Hypocrisy in action
“Political parties are supposed to stand on their own, not cook up alliances … to suit their own ends”
Erm,.. Tories, after TMs failed election, giving the DUP £1Billion to buy their votes to get Tory policies voted through the commons
” not attempting rig the result.”,.?
wasn’t it Boris who lied about the £350M per week in big letters on the side of a bus to get people to vote leave ?
orac – the tories stood independently at the election and didn’t try to rig the result by fielding candidates in some seats and not others, to narrow the choices.
I disagreed with theresa may and did not like the fact that she stupidly went to the polls and ended up with egg on her face. She was a staunch remainer and practically betrayed the people of this country.
Her tenure is best forgotten.
you are Just another bitter loser that cannot stand the fact that we are leaving – get used to it -your beloved, europe awaits you – please move.
the remain side project fear was a pack of lies and failed miserably.
“Do what the majority wants” Go yell that to Martin Luther King or Ghandi. The Majority is not always right!
“We must leave the EU, it’s democracy.”
The referendum ceased to be democratic when the leave campaign deliberately lied about the facts of leaving to encourage people to vote leave
after all, one of the “seven pillars of democracy” is “Accountability and Transparency” & the leave campaign was neither Transparent or it seems, Accountable.
I suppose you think it’s OK for campaigners to lie about the facts as long to get the result they want as long as it’s what you want as well ?
as M Coventry said above, “So you don’t believe in Democracy then?”
@Orac
typical sore loser looking for any excuse to stay in the unelected cabal of europe. If you wish to stay in europe, the ferries and trains are running – you go and move there.
The remainers have done nothing but lie and attempt to subvert the democratic result ever since – membership of this cabal of liars is not in our interests any longer.
The remainers lied about the future of europe – if the uk had voted to remain, then we would have been expected to adopt the euro, agree to schengen, accept that monetary policy for the UK would be decided by the ECB and our armed forces would eventually become part of the european armed forces.
That is the ultimate plan for europe – it will fail unless full integration takes place and fiscal transfers are done in the same manner as the USA – are you happy for the UK to be transfering more of its money to poorer eastern european countries. This is what Germany and the others are facing and those poor countries only agree to join for the cash.
we are leaving, as it is better for the UK overall. I seem to recall we never had the choice to stay out in the first place.
the eu had over EUR248 million of irregularities in its spending in 2013 – this was classed as fraud.
in the same year the Uk,was one tenth of that at about £27 million in what was classed as fraud in government spending.
and what about juncker and co – flying around in private jets at everyones expense, yet talking shite about climate change.
these shitebags do not care about you and only want the Uk in europe to access more cash for themselves and impose their will on this country.
Our MP’s are weak and pathetic – not one of the labour/lib dem or greens are world statesmen/women, they are only fit to hide in little groups in europe, voting as they are told to do. They are quitting politics because they simply are not up to the job of negotiating on behalf of this nation on their own, instead of hiding in a group like cowardly followers.
Well I wouldn’t vote for either party.
Never ever vote for any party that refuses to honour democracy.
Whether you agree with leaving the EU or not the going against democracy will be the final downfall of our once respected nation.
You need to vote Brexit Party, they’ll sort it out (good luck).
“our once respected nation”
I think the current government’s farcical handling of Brexit has already dealt with that…
Green Party, isn’t her hubby involved with open cast mining in Asia?
Yes – the hypocrisy of vix being on a green ticket and her husband being involved in large scale mining – destroying the environment in the process – and no it is not sustainable – all that digging releases carbon into the atmosphere and destroys the natural habitats of the creatures living there and their ecosystem..
this link gives a pic of him and what they were doing a few years ago..

Why vote Green when they have more faces than Big Ben and Lib Dem’s should look up the meanings of both Liberal and Democrat as they are neither and never will be
