Haylands Primary School, Ryde and Lanesend Primary School, Cowes, travelled to Southampton to compete in the first 2016 Be Your Best Southampton J Rock yesterday (Thursday) and not only did they pick up an array of Awards of Excellence, but Lanesend Primary School placed first in the event.
Their performance ‘Where the Wild Things Are’ was a feast for the eyes. Elaborate and inventive costumes combined with intricately detailed headpieces in a spectacularly designed performance which also used strong drama skills to take spectators on a journey of imagination.
Haylands Primary School (pictured left) also attended the event and were awarded numerous awards of excellence for their performance ‘Food for thought’, a relevant and thought-provoking piece that looked at the Isle of Wight Foodbank and the work it does. A creative set moved frequently throughout the performance with a fun supermarket background being a particular highlight and the catchy soundtrack had the audience clapping along!
The event, held at O2 Guildhall Southampton, attracted a sell-out audience and was supported by PQA, Association of Chief Police Officers Criminal Records Office, Southampton City Council, Hampshire County Council, Hampshire Drug and Alcohol Action Team, Ian Wright Consulting, Radian, HC3S, Hampshire Healthy Schools and Zeamu Music.
Patron of the Be Your Best Foundation, Baroness Ruth Henig CBE DL said:
“It is always very rewarding to see young people across the country continuing to embrace the initiative, flourishing in a 100% drug, tobacco and alcohol free environment and producing spectacular performances on stage.
“The entertainment provided tonight has been innovative and extremely exciting- a true testament to the months of hard work and commitment put in by all the schools, teachers and communities”.
